Sperry's boat-style shoes are what ya need. You'll still be wearing them when your 57 so don't be alarmed at their price tag.

Cargo shorts, whether they are camo, olive, or tan/brown, never go out of style. They are the quintessential "casual guy wear" of summertime. Throw a t shirt on and work on your car. Toss on a polo and go out for a few drinks. Take your shirt off and go to the beach. They go anywhere/everywhere.

Completely disagree with ya here; nobody has been laid in cargo shorts since 'nam.

OP, if you're looking to improve your look, first switch to above knee khaki shorts. (Regardless of just my opinion) Some people love the look of cargos, some people hate them, but its hard to argue against plain khaki shorts.

Simple, brown boat shoes, sneakers (nothing beats a pair of 991s), or flip flops are all pretty stylish pairs of summer shoes to wear.

I completely agree. They're like the pants with the legs that zip off. Why do you need 17 pockets?

For old dudes - Plain front (not pleated) shorts - khaki with a bright-colored shirt, or plaid/check shorts with a plain/pale shirt.

And slippers.

'cause khaki shorts with no cargo pockets seem a little formal. They're basically short slacks. The non-pocketed non-slack style all seem to be in the young men's section. I feel progressively odder about buying stuff from that area.

Im 43 and still wear jeans, tshirt and sneakers (actually waterproof hikers that look like sneakers) on a daily basis. I have no plans on changing and could care less if it looks juvenile...if its what you like then wear it.

This is depressing. I thought when you start getting older you are supposed to care less about what people think about how you dress. Sounds like when I turn 40 soon I'm going to end up acting like I'm 18 again and caring what everyone else thinks. Damn!

The point is that once you're 40, you should have enough common sense to know that you're not spontaneously going to find yourself in a pick-up basketball game, or a track meet.

If you want to be comfortable...

My summer shoe of choice is either Sperry (leather or canvas) or Vans Authentic (white, blue, or red canvas).

Interesting. I find bball shorts and sneaks WAY more comfy than kakis and docksiders. I'm in the target demographic of 40's. I also find myself more often involved in a sporting or athletic pursuit than going to a fashion show. Guess my "common sense" is fubar

Cause I have lots of shit to carry. My cargo shorts only have 6 pockets, give or take a pocket or two. They also don't go below my knees but down to them.

these exact shoes are the best pair of shoes ive ever owned. I've worn mine down pretty far by now, but I still wear them. No socks. Look amazing with nearly everything you could wear. And wait for a decent sale on them unless you're loaded.

Oh and one more thing...they lack much arch support. Any normal day activity is fine, but if you're gonna be walking excessively then yeah.

edit: Also, mine are made in El Salvador. Thats pretty cool. Some real hand labor went into it.

Can you convince my GF of this. If I was allowed to wear "formal" shorts to dinners with her family I'd be so happy!

And remember folks, as you get older, your shorts get shorter.
