Do not use your mouse to get Vista to go to sleep. It won't sleep and the machine hangs. MS know about this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930091
here how to get Vista to sleep:
IN the BIOS enable ACPI and S3 only.
IN the Vista power options in the control panel:
choose balanced plan and change plan settings
Turn off display 20 min
Put the computer to sleep 45 minutes
Under advanced power settings:
require password on waking? your choice
sleep-sleep after -45 minutes
allow hybrid sleep -No (takes forever to go to sleep)
hibernate after-never
power buttons and lid
power button action-sleep
Apply. Ok
Now the machine will sleep after 45 minutes and if you want to put the computer to sleep, just push the power button! Using the mouse and the start menu-sleep will hang the computer.
If your computer wakes up all the time when it is not supposed to, turn off wake the machine on LAN, Mouse, and Keyboard in the device manager.
