I had mine taken out last Thursday and I've been eating ice cream, yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes and soup. I could have probably eaten firmer foods within the first couple of days but it's not a bright idea.

I had all four out under general on my birthday in June (lucky me). I ate ice cream about two hours later, I was surprised how hungry I was but then I hadn't eaten between midnight and 4pm... That evening I stocked up on some calorie-rich food, muffins and ice-cream. I could pretty much eat what I wanted over the next two weeks, as long as I went slow and careful. Also made sure I was taking extra calcium and the usual multi-vitamin to give my body the best chance (I've got a lot of food allergies that prevent me getting them normally).

Definitely avoid anything remotely sharp or crunchy, nothing bitty either as another poster wisely advised. I thought I'd be eating a lot of rice but it was a nightmare. You'll want to keep those sockets nice and clean to prevent infection, my dental hygiene went through the roof as a result of the operation. The worst part for me was having to take the painkillers to avoid the pain, but they clashed with my anti-dep meds so I was pretty trippy for a week or so. Oh, I also hated the stitches, they made me feel as if there were little bits of food in my mouth all day which is so annoying, hence all the brushing. Talking of hygiene, your surgeon will probably advise you stay clear of mouthwash for the first 36 hours or so, and no swilling out on the first day. Don't be tempted to spit blood into a bowl or whatever they give you either, I had a bad bleed at the start and was sick of drooling thanks to the numb mouth. Got told off for that cos I was preventing it from congealing. Doh!

Just make sure you've got plenty of DVD's/books/games ready along with the ice-cream. Good luck!

How many are you having done? If it's a side or all of them, maybe you could get a general like I had. Two of mine were problematic which made me a candidate, having all four done made the surgeon tell me it was "very much in my best interests" to be knocked out. Subtle hint there. I've had four teeth out before but on different days and certainly nothing as involved as the wisdoms, couldn't have faced it awake.

If you're very nervous, ask your dentist about the general. It was great for me, went to sleep, woke up and it was all over bar the recovery. Btw, the amount of pain involved will vary for each person because everyone's teeth are different. Your surgeon will have the most informed advice once they have seen the X-rays etc.

I slept with the cotton in my mouth and didn't eat much to get the maximum effect of the drugs. Then I got pho the next day.

I had two pulled a couple of years ago and among the instructions was about food. Told me to eat milk based stuff: yogurt, cottage cheese, creamed soups.

Since I am an android, I had no pain (seriously).
