It is difficult.

Since the Simpsons is a social satire, watching something from 10-15 years ago will not have the same punch as it did back then.

Also, not being FROM that culture will have a similar effect.

The same thing was shown for shows like Seinfeld, which many (especially from the NYC Metro area) found hysterical. But now, even I find them less humorous as their references have become stale.

The main thing to keep in mind is that they are pointing out how stupid people out but, unlike Mr. Bean or the Three Stooges, they usually do not resort to only physical violence to do so.

Most of what Homer does makes NO sense whatsoever, but you have to know why it is being done. If you don't then it is just plain stupid and not satirical.

Now, as for Japanese Anime? Yeah, that stuff is great, but some of the most insipid humor I have ever seen. Usually the typical breast-watching semi sexual or gender related humor with exaggerated facial expressions (like their face turning into an oval with huge eyes and a mouth shouting, or the famous "river of tears").

If I were you, I would not try to introduce her. Or, at least, not expect her to like it.

I would start her on other shows first, like Robot Chicken, The Venture Brothers, hell, even Invader Zim before you go to something that depends more on a knowledge of (past) current events and cultural norms.

Yeah... I'm not sure how never seeing the Simpsons is even possible unless you're Amish or have been living in a native African tribe for the past 20 years.
Yup, it would be akin to not knowing ***WHAT*** TV is, or being shown a keyboard and getting back a blank look.

49 posts and no one has doubted the OP actually has a girl friend. ATOT I am dissapointed.
Or even pics of alleged girl friend?!!!!!!! WTF ATOT?!!!

OK I have a theory - bear with me. Lets assume the OP's alleged GF is exactly 18. I won't go lower, but its certainly possible. Now 2010 - 18 puts her birth at roughly 1992ish.

The Simpsons "Season 1" is 1989-90, the TU stuff earlier, like 87-88. Thats easily 3 years before she was born. Now give or take 7-8 years till the kid starts to remember stuff and grows up and starts to watch and enjoy regular TV and its already 1999, some claiming that the show was already past its prime.

So maybe the GF is just really young?

Agreed. Even now, Seinfeld and other shows that I really used to like are not being watched anymore. Its just not funny anymore. It wasn't funny for me as a kid until I got to about 17, and then the show was over. I think I just didn't understand until I reached that age and could relate.

God rest his soul - Sam Kinison - my hero - also suffers from some of this. Stale references to early 80's and how life was back then.

The Church-Lady - same thing. I never understood why it was so funny, but my parents sure did.

Honestly I just could never pick a "favorite" of mine... not even from a season. Just too impossible.

Oh I have tried. It seems to change so often. A better (and nerdier) method I've done is graded every episode 1-9. There are only about 10 A+'s, but I'm a tough grader

that's probably some of the most retarded shit I've read in a month...and this is ATOT!

it's great if you have the mind of a 12 year-old, I guess, ...but most people are expected to grow the fuck up.

It's true a lot of the jokes aren't as funny as they used to be and can't have the same value. Take this little joke for example
http://images.wikia.com/simpsons/images/c/cd/Cypress_Creek_2.png
The episode aired in 1996. When you saw that back then it was like "LOL an elementary school with a website? It must be a very modern upscale place and it really makes Springfield look outdated." But these days it's like yea so whats the big deal? Then theres all of the political and celebrity jokes from 15 years ago.

I'd seen bits and pieces here and there growing up, but I never got really into it until last year...wtf? I watched 15 seasons within a few months and I love it. Granted, I do acknowledge the earlier seasons have more value but it was a big "holy shit why did I never appreciate this before" experience. I am 24.

FelixDeKat:
Ive never seen the Simpsons either.
You also think that people that cheat should be put on a sex offender list. Thus, your opinion means absolutely nothing

I... I usually can't stand illogical attacks such as an ad hominem...

But DAMNED if this doesn't make perfect sense!

Quoted for MOTHERFUCKING TRUTH!

I used to stay up to watch the Simpson on Tracy Ullman... being a small child at the time I know realize how incredibly AWESOME my parents were.

Bad mouthing season 1 doesn't make sense! Sure, they didn't have their feet under them, but the psychological satire is there and it is awesome.

Anyone else here have the OPs GF pegged as a cylon (most likely in his head); Because as we all know, when someone mentions a GF it's pics or ban!

absolutely none... the entire adult cartoon genre by Matt Groening, Seth McFarlane, et all, is utter rubbish... and bring out the true immaturity in young adults.

As said 3-8 are all gold. I would say even 9 and 10 are good enough to buy. The rest really don't have enough good episodes in them, though there are a few.

Can't remember which season, but I think the Australian episode may be my favorite or at least up there.

Season 6 I believe, Bart vs Australia.
Yeah season 9 is worth buying ,season 10 is where it seriously goes to shit when Mike Scully became the show runner.
