GF4: is it worth it?

From what I see, GF4 is worth the upgrade only if you have too much money to burn or you don't have a GF3. I think the reason is, for the games that GF3 can handle well GF4 won't make a whole lot of difference: talking about 100fps versus 200fps. For the games GF3 sucks at, GF4 is not great either, like commanche4(I am kinda of a 75fps guy so 30fps and 40fps is the same for me).

I think a much more reasonable upgrade curve is to skip GF4 and go directly to whatever nvidia's next generation chip is if you have a GF3 currently.

What's your thought on this?

4600 = not
4400 = not
4200 = yes

This from an R8500 user.

Of course, the Radeon would then replace the GF2 GTS Pro in rig #2!

Well i have a geforce 3 ti200 in this computer, i am building another computer and i went ahead and got a geforce 4 ti4600 and let me tel you, YOU WILL NOTICE THE DIFFERNCE, i mean i was lagging bad in games like dungeon siege at high detail, not anymore, had some in myth III also, not anymore. Just look at benchmarks, you can see the difference.

What he said. I had a g3 ti-200 and went to a ti-4600 and the difference to me was staggering. I did not expect to see the difference be so profound.

I'm upgrading my Ti500 to a Ti4600 and the significant performance difference between the two cards is well-worth the upgrade for me.

I'll probably get a Geforce 4 4400 or a Geforce 4 4200 depending on price difference when the latter gets out, and since I'm using a Geforce 2 Pro 32MB (200/400 MHz) I expect to see a big difference. Partly because of the large on-board memory, since even slight AGP texture transferring can screw up online shooting games.

You'll be alot happier with a 128MB ATI RADEON 8500 (Retail). It's faster and better than a GeFarce4-Ti4600.

Links please? I would be fairly surprised to see the 8500 faster than a Ti4600.

I would like to see some links/benchmarks as well. Especially since all the benchmarks I have seen show the 4600 smacking the 8500 around like a red headed stepchild. (Literally +50% performance). They aren't even close.

False Christian, you should change your name to "False Prophet"
"You'll be alot happier with a 128MB ATI RADEON 8500 (Retail). It's faster and better than a GeFarce4-Ti4600. "

So, by having 10% faster core/RAM than 128 LE, the retail is going to make up the difference between 47 and 82fps? Sure it is.

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020418/vgacharts-02.html
Or between 75 and 124fps? I see.

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020418/vgacharts-03.html
Q3 is at least close, but then again the game is 3 YEARS OLD.

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020418/vgacharts-04.html
If your argument has one saving grace, it's Jedi Knight II, where a 8500 128 MIGHT be faster than a "GeFarce"

http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020418/vgacharts-05.html
It won't make up that gap.

Once you have played a few games on a GF4 4600 at 1600x1200 with all details maxed, you will see that it is definitely worth it. Its like a Porsche, there is no comparison.

No, it's not much like Porsche at all. Porsche costs tens of thousands of dollars, is a status symbol recognized the world over, can induce women to lose their clothes, men to think "I wish...", and is unobtainable to most of the world.

A Ti 4600 is a fast VGA that costs $350, will be a fast VGA for another 6 months, causes women to yawn, men to think "maybe I'll pick one up next time I'm shopping, is a status symbol only in grade schools, and is obtainable by anyone with a job or plasma to sell.

See the difference?

I am currently running a tired radeon 32MB ddr and unfortunately I don't have the money to shell out for a GF4 TI4600 so I'm going to settle for the 4200 or 4400 depending on how much money I can spare. It also kinda depends on how much bitchin I have to hear from the wife

LOL- good one. I was just amused by the comparison. A P4 2GHz is "fast" but I still wouldn't call it a "Porsche".

You definitely get enough horsepower to start to run some of the more hard core games (MOHAA) at higher resolutions with all the goodies turned on. I don't know about you, but when I buy a $50 game I want it to look the best that it can look today not 6 months from now when vid cards get cheaper.

I'm very happy with my TI-4400, and looking forward to using the DVI output in the near future on a flat panel screen!
