Gfs computer fell..

Alright so the computer fell about a foot. It was on when it fell and when it was picked up it turned off. It won't turn on at all, not even a slight power up. I got a power supply tester today and the tester showed the PSU as fine and healthy. I'm now in the process of rebuilding it. I ordered a new case and mobo. What are the odds that the cpu/ram was damaged if the power supply is healthy? Also any idea why it won't go on? I really hope the motherboard is the only thing that's broken.(if it's even that) Can a PC even power on if the CPU & memory is fried?

Unplug the drives and see if it does anything. Can you see visible damage?

Before buying new parts I would have tried unplugging every single thing and then plugging them all back in again in case something isn't making a good connection anymore. In the process of doing so I'd be closely looking for physical damage in hopes of finding where the problem is so I can replace the fewest amount of parts, only the damaged ones.

Yes it would power on the fans and BIOS if the cpu and memory are damaged or not connected fully and you would get a fault code from the BIOS. Some boards give you fault codes as a series of beeps, others as alphanumeric on an on board 7 segment display.

Thank you for the replies. I don't see any visible damage. I tried re-plugging everything back in and it still doesn't go back on. I also tried replacing the power switch with the reset switch. Is it possible that the motherboard can just be fried then? Also I read somewhere that some mobo's don't power on if the cpu is fried? It's an asrock mobo if that helps. Shouldn't it just go on if the PSU plugs are plugged into the mobo? The CPU was also seated fine. I still don't understand how a motherboard can break like this if it only fell a foot. Do you guys think it's most likely the mobo then?


It's not that big of a deal since I needed a new case anyway and ordered the new mobo for $75 refurbished. (they don't make 1155 sockets new anymore). I'm just worried that the cpu is damaged also.

I've never had a CPU fry so I don't know if the mobo would power on or not, might depend on the mobo. The mobo really should power on to give you the fault code to let you know which component is the problem but that depends on the mobo manufacturer.

I have had RAM fail and the mobo powered on and showed a C1 code on the 7 seg. display letting me know it was the RAM stick that wasn't seated in properly.

It's likely the mobo in your case, that would be my best guess. As for how it could happen, the mobo traces could have been damaged if the CPU HSF is heavy and caused a crack in the traces.

HSF was the standard intel one, so it's pretty light. When the PSU fries peoples mobo's/CPU isn't the PSU dead afterwards, or can it still fry it and appear fine afterwards? Have you ever tried powering on a motherboard without a cpu installed? I really hope it's just the mobo. I ordered an MSI board (didn't have much choice because of 1155) and it's coming from Hong Kong, so it's going to be a while. :/

Worst case scenario is i'd have to pay about $60 more for a used i5 3470. I hate buying used parts, but it would cost me so much more at this point buying new. If I have to buy a new cpu that's socket 1155, is the i5 3470 still my best bet, or is there another chip that's a bit faster for around the same price? My budget for the cpu is about $70 used on ebay. Possibly the 3550 or 3570?

Did the hsf fall off the cpu?

Any damage where the case button and light connectors are on the board?

Does the power button on the case still have a good click?

Have you tried triggering a turn-on without using the case power button?

Okay so I got the new motherboard put in but now there's another problem. The computer powers on for a quick second then powers off. I ripped my working PSU and memory out of my working computer (both ddr3) and it still does the same thing. I bought a used board off ebay, so i'm not sure if it's the board or the CPU. On the other motherboard, it didn't power on at all. I also tried this new board without a CPU and it does the same thing. What do you guys think I should do? It's for sure not shorting out or anything because I put it on a box to test it. Both the 24pin and the CPU pins are connected from the PSU.

Oh and get this, when I connected a 4pini into the cpu slot, it went on and stayed on. Then I powered it off and it did the same thing again. It's really strange.. Even after I re-arranged my memory once, it stayed on. Then I tried turning it off and putting it back on and it went back to the original problem. I couldn't see if there was a post because I didn't have a video card in at the time.

Or its grounding out somewhere.
