Hired new GPU VP to take in-house GPU across finish line

The demand for talent and the talent’s demand for interesting challenges will never let up, especially in Silicon Valley. One such example is Dr. Chien-Ping Lu, or CP as he’s known among his friends. CP was the developer of Nvidia’s nForce IGP which was a small but powerful GPU in a northbridge chip designed to work with AMD and Intel processors before they put the GPU inside the CPU. CP helped Nvidia to fight against Intel in the IGP war, which ended with a sweet $3B deal for Nvidia . . .

It’s our guess we could see something official no later than this time next year. What remains to be seen is how far Samsung will take it. If they have the breakthrough we think they do, will they keep it in house for competitive advantage, license it to one of their partners, or maybe even go bigger and make it multi-platform from mobile, to TV, game consoles, and PCs? And the world can’t seem to get enough GPUs for all the AI ambitions being explored. Samsung already has a big AI team, they must certainly be eyeing this development.

Samsung is developing GPUs for years and slowly they should get their first designs ready. But this will all be gpus for their SoCs. They'll never launch a different gpu. There are many GPU developers in mobile space and few in desktop for a good reason. The costs in mobile space are very low compared to what you need to spend in desktop and the ROI is much better in mobile.

with 120hz going mainstream and many popular games coming to mobile, we could use all the GPU competition we can get.

Samsung wants us to hook up our phones to a dock with mouse, keyboard, and monitor to have a desktop like experience. Makes sense for them to completely avoid a real desktop. why bother when their phones are nearly as powerful.

"nearly as powerful" About 20 times weaker than a top of the line desktop.

"120hz" going mainstream. Hardly any monitors available at 120hz outside of giant retailers like amazon and ebay, which is a mess to ship due to high shipment costs and taxes and processing fees on the border than increase the cost by about 25% to 30%.

120hz is totally going mainstream. Just be patient! Here in USA there is always a 144hz around $150-180 with DisplayPort. Xbox One already supports 120hz as well. I am still kicking myself for not getting the Alienware 240hz which was $250 last week.

In Europe, 144hz is far more expensive and the limited retailers overprice nearly everything. I feel sorry for my European friends.

I don't see too many console gamers complaining that their Jaguar CPU is too slow. Compare that to an iPhone A11 CPU!

Yeah this is just for their SoC, and if anything more is for video processing in their TVs and stuff, or maybe as part of their AI development, so highly doubtful this is a discrete GPU. But since ARM designs are getting more powerful and getting better support, its likely just a matter of time til Samsung moves to put their own chips in all their products (so laptops), and they'll need a GPU since the ARM one often isn't stellar and Qualcomm is kinda all over the place in GPU performance (sometimes good, sometimes not). Have a hunch that some of these companies are going to be mad that they didn't buy AMD when they were about rock bottom because it would make GPU development a lot cheaper. But then, Samsung has shown they don't have a problem taking shortcuts so I won't be surprised if AMD or Nvidia ends up suing them over aspects of their GPU. There's a decent chance they might work with them too (lots of rumors that AMD helped Apple developing their GPU).

No its not. Its getting more popular, but games aren't handling 120Hz on consoles (and they absolutely will push 4K over high-framerate 1080p; plus as Microsoft and Sony start to push to streaming games high framerates are not going to be feasible there), and few TVs do actual 120Hz.

What is far more important is getting adaptive refresh on all displays (including TVs), this way games can offer higher framerates and smoother experiences without having to push to either stupid high framerates (that they'll likely only manage for overlays/GUI stuff). So if a game can manage say 75fps, it'll be smoother, but games that can only consistently do 40-50fps can also be smoother without having to drop all the way down to 30fps.

You're confusing them supporting 120Hz refresh with actually being able to run games at those framerates. That's a huge difference. On consoles they're going to cheat (just like they do on VR, where they add in frames to get the 90Hz, when the games run at 30-60fps - I thought they were targeting 45fps and then doing a frame doubling/black frame thing to do the 90Hz, its been a while so I don't recall exactly but I know that they don't render at 90fps because the power just isn't there) and that isn't the same (although it can look ok when done well). And on the iPad that's about making just the normal interface smoother, and probably for video editing.

I am not talking about current gen consoles. We shall see!

Phones are slowly adopting 120hz.
I'm off topic I'll shut up.
