Ghetto mods?

Inspired by a thread I saw over at XtremeSystems forums, I though it would be interesting to see any mods that have been done by people here.

Heres one I done yesterday HDD mod
Its a Seagate Barracuda 4, 60 gig drive that I've had for over 5 years.
Its been opened up before more than once, so I just decided to put a perspex top on it. As you do
Still works fine, did full surface scans with no errors.

I never had the time to get it fully implemented, but I have 10 fans in my big case, and I setup the fans to go to a DB9 serial port.
Fans to DB9
DB9 to fan controller

I'll be revisiting this project once I get done with moving.

My computer is built into a plastic milk crate. How's that for ghetto?

I rigged a vacuum hose to the intake of my pc and put the other end out the window in the winter.

It didnt really help though, I probably needed a more insulated hose.

wouldn't a vga port be better? then you'd have more pins that would allow you to control the speed of the fans as well.

wouldn't a vga port be better? then you'd have more pins that would allow you to control the speed of the fans as well.

you could write an little program that would pulse width modulate the pins to different speeds on the DB9.

Took a hacksaw to the stock heatsink and combined it with an HR3 plus.
Keeps the card from warping and much better cooling for mem chips than those flimsy heatsinks which come with the cooler.

8600gt needed better cooling and I had a thermalright HR11 lying around

You probably needed a much larger diameter hose. Axial fans don't generate too much pressure, so it probably wasn't drawing much air through there. Next Winter try a dryer duct.

I think the closest thing i have to that is having both sides of my computer open with a floor fan blowing on it. The ram slots are all too close together and overheat when i'm at home >_<

That's a Gainward GF3 Ti200 with a Socket A heatsink strapped to it. Plus two 80mm fans out of old PSUs.

The fans are routed to a fan controller with no speed detection. I could use a vga port, but the 3 layers of pins make soldering a bit more difficult. I also had lots of DB9 ports from old machines for practicing, so...
