I was getting a lot of SMART warnings from my hard drive and decided to replace it. So I slapped in the ghost 2003 floppy and did a drive image to a new drive. Everything seemed to go without a hitch and the data is definitely on the clone drive now but when I try to boot from it it gets past the initial black screen with the XP logo and that blue progress bar thing, gets to a blue screen with windows xp logo and nothing else and then stops. The same thing happens in safe mode. I don't know what to do at this point.

Original drive is a western digital 120gig drive with two partitions.
New drive is a western digitial 160 gig drive that had no data on it.
During imaging process I had the original drive on primary IDE and the New drive on my RAID controller.

Is there some kind of special parameter I need to set in ghost for xp boot imaging?
Somebody please help! I dont want to install XP a fifth time this year!

I ran into the exact same situation and the only thing I could do to get it to boot normally, was re-copy the drive with Drive Image Pro 7 by PowerQuest. It booted up, no problem after that. As to why it hangs at that blue screen with Ghost, I have no idea.

I recommend trying the free tools on the ultimate boot cd.
g4u is an openbsd boot tool that did a nice job both times used it, and the rest of the cd is just amazing. There are instructions on how to add your own floppy images to it, creating your own toolset. It is pretty all-inclusive as it is though.

It sounds kinda like you jumped hardware. Possibly a HAL or mass storage controller, dunno.

Run an inplace upgrade on your computer. Boot with your XP CD, being sure to provide RAID drivers with F6. Choose Enter to setup on the first screen then choose to Repair an installation when offered.

Sounds like you didn't clone the drive - ie., make an exact duplicate. That is not the same as imaging a drive. Cloning is an exact duplicate - everything in exactly the same place, including the MBR and system files. Imaging often requires restoring prior to use.

Cloning is simple - and I do it every week on three systems - and always have the source drive and target on the same controller, Master and Slave. It has never failed - but then again, I never use Norton Ghost for that.

The current software of choice is Acronis' TrueImage 7 - it has a direct cloning function, and that is best done using it's auto-created boot CD - that eliminates any problems with the OS. Same for DriveCopy 4 by PowerQuest - but that is limited to 80 GB drives.
