Ghost 7.0 and powerquest Drive image 2002
I have a new install of XP - I don't use system restore - so I want to be extra careful - is there any reason I can't make a drive image of the xp system with both programs - i.e. - backup to drive or cdr using both programs? Just to be extra careful. My reason is I once used a Powerquest Drive image that did not work. So am trying to be extra careful.

thanks

You shouldn't have any trouble. One program will just see the other as "so much other software." The only possible snafu is that there may be some sort of "monitoring" program in either one that keeps track of your data as it is added. I don't think there is one in Drive Image itself but there might be in one of the other programs. Just turn these off.

After you create an image with Drive Image you can use the built-in tool in DI to verify the new image. Start the "Image Explorer" browser, go to your new image, right-click on it and select "verify image" It will check your image. I've never had a problem using an image the passed this test.

To add extra assurance that your image is going to be problem-free, always run "chkdsk" before making an image.

I just made one using Drive Image 2002 6.0 three days ago and then had a major crash with xp that I just couldn't fix so I used the drive image to restore it and it worked perfectly.

I use PowerQuest's DriveCopy 4 for cloning from one hard drive to another. That is the safest way to keep your critical data without losing it.

If you create an image of your OS on the same hard drive what happens if your HD should suddenly die? You have lost everything.

I have two hard drives in racks and they can by removed by turning a key so you can keep your backup drive in a safe location.

DriveCopy runs from its own DOS floppy boot disk. The second floppy disk contains DriveCopy 4. Works so fantastically easy I am super happy with it.

I had two programs contaminated with a virus and one folder also contaminated. What to do? Simply ran DriveCopy 4 and cloned it from my good no-virus drive. Worked like a charm and it deleted all virus infections automatically during the cloning process. Certainly beats the instructions from Symantec on how to remove that virus manually taking up to SIX hours.

If I want to upgrade my HDD to a new one, ie. changing from my 100 GB Western Digital with the 2 mb cahce, to the 120 GB Western Digital with the 8 mb cache, would Ghost or Drive Image work? Will it copy everything from the "old" HDD to the new one without any problems? What I think would be ideal is if it copied, and all Windows had to do was identifiy the correct driver. Also, do I need to format the new HDD before I clone the old one to it? Or, should I just do a clean installation, and clone, or image it to the old drive?

Makes no difference if the drives are made by two different companies when using PowrQuest's DriveCopy4. There are no drivers to recognize as what you get with DriveCopy is an exact cloning of the original hard drive onto the cloned drive.

No, you do not need to format your new hard drive. You also do not need to partition it if you have partitions as DriveCopy auto formats the new drive and auto creates all partitions. Also resizes partitions if you are cloning to or from different size hard drives. PowerQuest's DriveCopy does all that for you.

The only thing you will notice if you have XP Pro is when booting up with the newly cloned drive is it will find a new hard drive, auto selects it and runs great. You do nothing.

In Windows ME/98 they do not notice you are using a different cloned drive. It simply boots up to Windows like magic.

I have a follow up and similar question. Working on an old system for a friend, I used Drive Image (today as a matter of fact) to copy the C drive (OS, etc) of a system that was on a 3.1 GB HDD. Then I switched the HD to a larger 8.4 GB drive. The Drive Image program worked great except that it only "used" 3.1 GB of the larger drive. It left the other 5.3 GB's as "unallocated". Mind you, it was previously FDISKed and Formatted. It was no big deal as I was able to use "Partition Magic" (gee, another PowerQuest program) to bring the rest of the drive in use, but did I miss something here? Maybe something in the way I set it up was not correct as I don't remember it doing this before when I used it. Of course, I don't think I've used it to load onto a larger drive before. Any ideas?

I think you skipped an option which allows you to increase the destination partition size.
Quite possibly. I do remember getting a pop up asking about or giving options for the destination drive. I "thought" I chose correctly. Evidently not. Thing is that this is not something one goes around "practicing" every day.

Yeah, you get a pop-up box giving you a few options but it's not too clear what some of them are all about. First few time this happened to me I was a little nervous that I was going to choose wrong and mess up my other partition.
