Ghosting NTFS and FAT32

My replacement 60gxp is on its way and I have a question about partitioning it for Ghost. I plan on having a 98SE partition, a 2000 partition, and a ghost partition.

I was thinking of 5gb for 98se (fat32), 50gb for 2000 (ntfs), and the remaining 5gb for ghost images. Does the ghost partition need to be formatted? Does ghost allow imaging and restoring of an ntfs partition?

The newest versions of Ghost allow NTFS ghosting. There used to be a problem with older versions concerning security issues. Just keep the images on a partition that you're not going to touch.

While Ghost will create an image FROM a NTFS partition, it will not allow you to write an image TO a NTFS partition. Therefore, the partition you use to store NTFS images on MUST be FAT32.

jmorrell is right on the money. However, will 5 GB be enough to ghost a 50GB partition? Unless you're just using the 5GB ghost partition to store a fresh system install w/o any apps or games.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I'll most likely ghost a bare OS and service pack, and the OS with some apps installed. Most of the remainder is used for video captures and other data, which is normally backed up to CD. Of course, another hard drive would be best.

I have an enterprise edition of Ghost which is over 2 years old and I ghost NTFS drives all time. That is all we have at my office: NT40 computers with NTFS partitions. We have some machines with a FAT16 partition and an NTFS partition, and are able to Ghost those machines too.

Yes, it is true the Enterprise Editon of Ghost will write to NTFS partitions, but the Personal Edition will not. The Personal Edition works in DOS, and DOS cannot see NTFS partitions to write to them.

I didn't know that... we do have the newer edition of the non enterprise version here where I work, but we never use it because it is so conventient and easy to Ghost computers across the network.
