It would be nice if they could use something other than a jig. It might make it possible to capture one alive rather than severely hurting the animal.

Weak, the squid they captured is so small. Somewhere in the article they said it was small by giant squid standards.

Now they know where they are. Its only a matter of time before they get bigger ones.

Strk - I agree. It sucks that they had to kill it

Of course they do -- especially when they want to see them alive to study them.

It would be cool if they could set up some sort of underwater enclosure with one side open, and bait the squid into entering so they could close it up and observe it for a while.

Can't wait for them to pull in one that's like 60 feet. That'll be so awesome!

ITs funny how they find a incredibly rare animal and then decide to kill for no good reason.

A) They weren't trying to kill it. It died during the capture.

B) Scientific research isn't "no good reason".

C) the animal is usually very deep in the sea, it's population isn't easily estimated. Nobody really knows how "rare" they are.

This squid looked extremely small for a "giant squid". I remember when they first photographed a giant squid. One of its tentacles look like its the same length as the whole squid in this vid.
