Can someone explain what happened in the David Akers situation? I only saw a brief highlight of him diving into the Giants sidelines and taking a beating from a few Giants.

Absolutely nothing. TV tried to make it into a big incident, it was nothing at all. He thought he got blocked in the back during the opening kickoff of the game and went after someone on the Giants sideline where he was promptly beaten and ejected back onto the field.
He went after an assistant coach.
That's what the TV guys said, but it didn't look like that to me. It looked to me like his momentum from the field just carried him into the coach, but who knows.

He basically threw a hit at the assistant coach. In the replay, you see him make contact and extend his arms, the same way you see D-backs or L-backs throw hits on ball carriers/receiver.

Or he was sticking his arms out to try, and stop himself? I think it'd be better to hit someone with your arms first, rather than a full body hit.

If he wanted to lessen the blow to the coach, he would've had his arms extended to begin with. He didn't extend his arms until he made full body contact with the assistant coach. That's throwing a hit.

I posted this in the other NFL thread and I'll repost it here:

Andy Reid (Eagle's coach) is a master of squandering sure victories.

He's able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Hey, I have an idea- we're trouncing our opponent with our current game plan, have 3x as many yards as them, and have the crowd's support. What should we do next? Stick to the same game plan? Nah, let's come out of halftime with prevent defense and try to hold onto the lead instead of scoring some more. I know it's still the 3rd quarter, but we might as well just use prevent defense and then on offense run continuous draws up the middle for no gain and punt it away. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Since when does 8 sacks = 350 yards and 30 points?

That was one of the worst collapses I've ever seen. Absolutely pathetic. And now Kearse might be gone for the year because Michael Lewis doesn't know how to fall on a fvcking fumble.

I didn't watch the game, but I saw some ESPN highlights and I briefly saw a clip of the Giants players attacking Eagle's Akers....what was that all about?

You really need to fvck off already?

You make it obvious every football and baseball season that you know nothing about sports, yet you mosey on into every sports thread and start preaching about how great the Patriots and Red Sox are.

What happened to your "You heard it hear first, the Red Sox will win the 2006 World Series" post? The Red Sox were obviously a fluke team from the beginning of the year, and despite what people told you, you failed to let up on your persistnce that they would win it all this year. Had it not been for the Orioles and the crappy NL teams, the Red Sox would have barely been above .500 on August 1. Or, what happened to "You heard it hear first, the Patriots will win the Super Bowl" post from last season? The patriots got brutalized in the playoffs (and don't start b!tching about poor officiating, complain about Brady instead).

Ok, as much as I didn't like that Red Sox thread he made either, you saying the Red Sox were a fluke team this year is IDIOTIC! And not the good, funny kind of idiotic like the Red Sox were 2 years ago, but the "are you stupid or just plain high?" idiotic.

Yeah, the Red Sox are a fluke team, a fluke team who was ahead of the AL East until their All-Star catcher got hurt as well as their reliable 5-hole hitter in Trot Nixon.

A fluke team only 2 years removed from sweeping the NL champs and winning their first World Series in 86 years, after coming close in the pervious 5 years, and still with many of the key players left over from that team, not all but a good deal of the important ones.

A fluke, $120,000,000+ team, which doesn't even make sense, but that's the point I'm getting at, you calling them a FLUKE makes no sense. Underachieving, maybe.. overpaid compared to their results, you could make a case.. but please, don't make asinine comments like that just because you have an axe to grind against PaulE.

Even before Varitek went down (both in early August) the Red Sox record was inflated due to them beating up on the weak NL (11-3 or something) and the Orioles (1 loss all year at that point). The reason I referenced August 1st was because Varitek and Nixon were still in the lineup at that point in time (Nixon actually got hurt on the 30th, and put on the DL 2 days later). If you take out those the NL and the Orioles, the Red Sox were barely above .500 even with Varitek, Nixon, and Wakefield.
