I'm not sure where Spartan Technologies get their information about Corsair ddr-ram not working in sis648 chipset mobos, but I have used Corsair PC3200(cas 2.5) 512 mb successfully in an Abit SR7-8X and now the Gigabyte 8SG667 without any problems. I have been able to run in DDR400 cas 2.5 mode in both mobos. I am not able to run in cas 2 mode on the ABIT SR7-8X mode, but the fact that it works in cas2.5-3-3 mode compared to the Gigabyte running in 2.5-4-4 mode, might be a better choice. From reading threads, it looks like people are having problems getting the Corsair to work in the Asus P48SX mobo.

Yes but since Sis is discontinuing support for this chipset, the question is, will you be able to get bios updates? Personally, I use a board for at least a year to a year and a half, and I need bios updates constantly as I've been used to. I am considering this board but I am worried that since sis is discontinuing this chipset, that the bios support will also stop.

I haven't heard they are discontinuing support for the SiS648.

They are just not going to bring the SiS648DX to market.

well I took the chance on this since I couldn't wait for dual channel DDR (I have a feeling we won't see stable chipsets till christmas). If I see a HUGE performance difference between it and DDR400 I'll make the jump at that time.

Help! Someone! Help! I'm being drawn to the Dark Side! The i850E with PC1066 is calling me...

Seriously, I'm like don777: upgrade infrequently, flash bios all the time.

Since I am "in heat" again, metaphorically speaking, I'd like to get technology that is solid right now, and worry about tomorrow, uh, tomorrow. I do like what I read about the 648/ddr400, but one thing nags me: even ddr400 can't slake the thirst of the P4 Northwood at 533fsb. The Rambus pc1066, well, Old Frank and Bert said it this way at THG:

Here, you should keep in mind that the Intel Pentium 4 has a maximum bandwidth of 4.2 GB/s. In the near future, this will reach well over the 3 GHz limit. Only Rambus memory in the form of PC4200 (533 MHz) is capable of taking full advantage of this bandwidth. By using DDR SDRAM, such as DDR266 or DDR333, the bandwidth remains restricted to 2.1 GB/s and 2.7 GB/s, respectively.

And that leaves ddr400 at 3.2 GB/s, which still leaves our P4 thirsty. There's just something "right" about memory and cpu that top out at the same level.

So the Dark Side is calling me, Gigabyte 8IHXP...

man if you got the cash, go for it...that was the only thing holding me back from the evil rambus empire.

What are the overclocks and what chips/memory are you using on this board?
Did anyone try the wire wrap trick on a 1.6a and this board?
Thanks

well for those in CA..you can order from directron.com $99 no tax. I think my shipping was like $8. there's $10 off 100 promo code floating around. I bumped it barely over $100 with two 3D skeletons. I ordered it last tuesday and ups tracking shows I'll get it tomorrow/today Wed Sep 25th. I got my P4 2.53GHz from twco.com today so the gigabyte sis648 mobo is my last remained piece I needed to put the puzzle together. I only got crucial ddr 266 256MB so when I get rich and famous I'll get a 512MB DDR 400...maybe for christmas or something.

I am looking to build my new gaming system and currently looking at the 8sg667 with a 2.53 p4, samsung 512 ddr400 and gigabyte's 9700pro... I have read this entire forum but just wanted to get the confirmation from anybody who has used these components on their compatibility. currently i am planning to only use one stick of ddr400, but may expand in the future.

thanx

on another note, I noticed that gigabyte has taken the ddr400 support off of their web page for the 8sg667

LeThurneK,

I am using the configuration you mentioned. I have the Gigabyte board, P4 2.53 and 512 MB Corsair 3200 CAS2 memory.

I have had NO problems at all and am very happy with this board. I have not experienced a single lock up and currenly run my processor at 2.7 Ghz and the memory at 374 Mhz. I have clocked the Corsair to 412 with no problems, but to do so I had to clock down the processor to get an acceptable ratio for the motherboard. My only complaint is that the BIOS seems unfinished, simple things like AGP aperature size and AGP speed (2x,4x,8x) are not present. Not to mention the complete lack of any voltage adjustments or better memory clock settings. I would also like to see temperatures display in the health section of the BIOS. The word seems to be that Gigabyte is coming out with a new BIOS for this board, but until then, I am happy with very nice performance and stability.

Edit: I am not using the 9700 Pro, I just saw that in your post.

Man....I love this board. My 2.53 is rock solid @ 2.83 with stock voltage. I'm a little concerned though at not being able to monitor it's vital stats. I tried installing MBM 5 and the numbers are all over the place. What are you guys using to check temps and voltages? Btw, I'm running XP Pro.

What is this deal about a special case needed or something? Maybe I didn't catch something right.

No special case is needed. You are probably thinking about the discussion about the backplane. It does not ship with a backplane because it uses the standard ATX format backplane that should have shipped with all new cases. Mine fit perfectly. Most motherboards only ship with a replacement backplane if they have proprietary ports such as IEEE1394 or ethernet and the standard ATX format won't fit.

Hello all. I've been contemplating on getting this board but everyone who is currently selling it has terrible reseller ratings. Nonetheless, everyones experience and input in this thread has pressured me into taking a chance. I have one fairly beginner-type question. Newegg.com is selling Mushkin PC2700 memory for 78.00 and the Gigabyte-approved Samsung PC3200 for 88.00. Is the price difference of 10 dollars worth it to make the jump from DDR333 to DDR400? Also, a corollary to this question; Mushkin's website has not approved the Gigabyte 8SG667 to be stable with it's memory. Is this to say that the board will not be stable with Mushkin 256MB PC2700 memory? Pardon the newbieness. Any help is appreciated.

Get the samsung memory.
Takes time to certify that certain memory work with certain boards.
