Gigabyte AC97 on-board sound

I just recently bought a GA-6VTXE-A PIII motherboard for my 1.4 Tualatin. I had tons of problems with the onboard soundcard and ended up disabling it. No matter what drivers I used I couldn't get it work properly. In games the sound would work but it would be half a second behind the action - so basically useless. DivX movies would studder like crazy - once again useless.

I disabled the on-board AC97 card and slapped my old SB PC128 in which immediately fixed all my problems. Is this consistent with Gigabyte's AC97 sound? Or have the new boards improved quite a bit?

First of all you need to comprehend a few things.

* Onboard stuff is not called "cards". Don't confuse people while asking a question

* AC97 is just the interconnection bus between the sound engine (in the chipset) and the analog/digital conversion chip (the codec, somewhere on the board).

Now, what do we have. VIA chipset, ergo VIA sound engine. Driver at www.viaarena.com. Sound stutter under heavy load? Get PCI performance patch from same site, if persistant, question CPU muscle - and back down on sound quality settings, e.g. 3D effects and such.

I have a Gigabyte 8pe667 ultra. The onboard sound is crappy also. I installed a SB LIVE Value. System is great now. I still would buy this mobo anyways.
