Things got 6 memory slots w/ DDR400 DC support, integrated SCSI controller, AGP 8X w/ AGP Pro, integrated Serial-ATA RAID , integrated IDE RAID, integrated Gigabit LAN, and more!! How much will this thing cost? $300?

Well, based on what i've read, canterwood won't bring much to the table for workstations beyond what Springdale will offer. Considering Springdale boards will probably be a lot cheaper, i think that's where i'll be looking. Great to see these products in the flesh though, almost time for a big upgrade!

That's a nice board. Remember that it has an integrated SCSI controller, along with lots of other stuff, so it's actually a pretty good value, IMHO.

Actually, it will have a 3-5% boost because of enhancements made specific to the Canterwood over Springdale. So yes there are benefits to having this mobo over the other one if you're a real performance junkie.

Integrated SCSI! I expect it'll cost a mint, but that's an impressive feature set. Now if it just had some 64-bit PCI slots... the gigabit ethernet controller is capable of saturating a 32-bit 33MHz PCI bus all by itself. Maybe they've put the gigabit LAN controller alongside the PCI bus, instead of on the PCI bus... anyone got insight on that question?

Picture of how LAN will work:Link

Caption from Xbit:
Well, this could have been the end of the story about the new features introduced in the North Bridge (Memory Controller Hub) of i865, but... The chipset North Bridge features one more bus with 266MB/sec bandwidth, which is intended for CSA (Communications Streaming Architecture) implementation. The major idea of this bus is to offer the possibility to create high-speed gigabit network connections. Due to the fact that there is a special bus for network needs, the network requests get processed much faster, and the CPU workload drops down significantly. Moreover, due to CSA, all network controllers connected to this bus can work with the memory directly. Intel suggests using Intel PRO/1000 CT chip as a network controller for the CSA.

It's on its own "CSA" bus direct from the North Bridge. No fighting for bandwidth.

Are you sure? I know the chipset supports it, but Gigabyte also used an NEC USB 2.0 controller and a Realtek Ethernet adapter on some ICH4 boards. As such, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the NIC just ran off the PCI bus.

Maybe you only get to use "TURBO" mode with the red dimm slots. The two red ones must be differentiated for a reason.

If you look closely its Red-Blue-Green. I was assuming that it was b/c this is a dual channel system right? So to take advantage of it maybe you need both colored slots populated.

We are talking about i865/i875 with ICH5 here. Not one of the older chipsets.

I know. My point is that GB completely ignored the features on the ICH4, so why not the ICH5?

For one thing, the GigE is located in the North Bridge rather than the South Bridge. We'll wait and see, I guess.

wow, 6 DIMM slots makes 3 GB of RAM affordable finally comparing the price difference between 1GB modules and 512MB modules

I understand that too. But GB has not shied away from the fast and easy route before, and in this case that means running the adapter off the PCI bus. It just seems that if they used the CSA feature they'd mention it on an 875 where people will be looking for it. But yes, we can only wait for now.

oopss... hehehe, damn that one is hard to see unless you look close. Then I guess it's just there to make sure people put the ram in the matching slots.

Is the SCSI connector the black thing at the top right, between the back panel and the CPU?
I see what I think are two yellow IDE connectors at the lower left, but there are also some white connectors at the front edge of the board.

The onboard SCSI chip is the larger chip below the PCI slots, and the U320 connector is at the bottom left (it's black so it's hard to see it).
