Gigabyte DQ6 and E6600 OC'ing

Ive finally got the componets and have been trying to OC my new rig to a something over 3ghz and be stable, first time OC'ing.

Componets:
Core 2 Duo E6600
EIGA Geforce 7950 GX2
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 4-4-4-12 RAM 1GBx2
Gigabyte 965P DQ6 mobo, F3 bios
Corsair 620W PSU
Creative Xi-Fi
WD 500gb HD
Scythe Infinity HSF w/ coollabatory liquid pro
Gigabyte 3D aurora case

I was able boot up with an FSB of 335 which reached 3ghz but couldn't get it stable, had the vcore up to 1.475v as well.

Right now I'm running stable at 2.7ghz with an FSB of 300.

What bios settings do I need to reach something stable for 3ghz+?

First, download and flash to the lastest BIOS F3 (08/22/2006). Power down and on the first boot load bios optimized default.

My bios settings (MIT screen) PRESS CTRL-F1 to show all options:
CPU Rate 8x (change to 9x for E6600)
CPU Host ENABLED
CPU HOST FREQ 400
PCI-E 100
CIA2 DISABLED
DRAM TIMING MANUAL
CAS 4
RAS TO CAS 4
RAS PRE 4
TRAS 15
ACT ACT DEL AUTO
RANK WRITE AUTO
WRITE TO PREC AUTO
REFRESH TO ACT 0
READ to PRE AUTO
MEMORY PERF NORMAL
DIMM OVERV +0.15V
PCI-E OVERV NORMAL
GMCh OVERV +0.1V
FSB OVERV +0.1V
CPU OVERV 1.375V

I'm able to Prime95 for 16 hours or more (the pictures shows 8, but I've done more than that):
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/8299/dq6pluse640032ghzvdim195bli0.jpg

I learned that high VDim (2V or higher) does not help with certain types of DDR2 - it was crashing soon. After going with just 1.95V, the system is now stable (8 hours on Prime95). If you are having issues, trying something like this (+0.15V).

I tested also the board with an E6600 and could not go above 3GHz without jacking up the VCore. My suggestion, try 8x375 or 9x333 for 3GHz.

EDIT: 500 posts!!
The board is capable of high FSB. I tried once 450x6 at 6-6-6 and same Vdim. It did boot and could run Prime95 for 40 minutes.

The problem at the end is always the CPU.

So what is the highest OC with the 6600 and the DQ6 have you seen? I personally have the DQ6 and the 6300 and am Prime95 stable for 24 hours at 3.5GHz (500MHz FSB).

I ask because my coworker has the 6700 and the ASUS P5B and is not getting much love with his overclocking. I am curious if the DQ6 would be a better choice for him (I absolutly love the DQ6).

Crank up all settings in the BIOS that have any of the words FSB, Volt, MCH, or MHz in them.

After trying the listed bios settings above I couldn't get my system to post. I'm beginning to think somethings faulty.

In my testing I've had the vDimm at +.3v to be stable, but to get it to even post at a 300fsb I'm having to leave the memory timings to auto, don't know whats the issue.

Also, does it matter which slots the sticks of RAM are in? I've got mine in the red ones as opposed to the yellow ones to give a little more room to the scythe infinity fan

Did you update the BIOS to F3?

I have the RAMs on slots 1&3 (1=the closest to the CPU).

Your speed is among the highest I've seen

Would you be nice and post your MIT settings?

I can reach 450 with 6x multiplier but didn't even try more, as the CPU seems to be the problem (I have to jack up the VCore above 3.2GHz and that would take the core temp above 61C under load).

I though about placing my E6400 into the DS4 and the E6300 into the DQ6, to see if something changes. I have the feeling the E6300 could go higher than the E6400.

Yes, I'm using the F3 bios.

Also after looking on another forum somewhere I set the RAM multiplier to 2, so it runs at a 1:1 ratio. It seems the DQ6 auto default runs it at 2:3.

So now I'm now running with manual memory timings but still stuck with a 312 FSB, anything above that windows wouldn't load or it immeadiatly froze when windows did load.

Anyone else using the DQ6 and the 6600? I've been digging around xtremesystems and some other forums and have seen other people with OC'ing issues with the DQ6. I'm thinking its a bios issue considering what people have been able to do with the DS3, which hopefully will be addressed with the F4 bios.

I have a couple of pics of my MIT settings about midway through this link:
http://smokedog.org/500MHz/oc.html

At 3.5GHz my load temps are about 62c (speed fan) and 71c(Core Temp). I am not too worried about it since the TCaseMax of this proc is 85c.

Make sure that your memory can handle the speed. I replaced my Value Select with some Corsair 6400C4. This memory is stable running 1000MHz @ 5-5-5-15 or 800MHz @ 4-4-4-12. Right now the memory is the bottleneck (again). If I wanted to plop down some fat coin and get some of that $500 DDR2 8000 or 8500 and then my wall would be cooling.

I am going to lap my proc and see what that does for my temps then ponder a water cooling solution. I am aiming for this 3.5GHz in a totaly silent setup.

But my system is still the same, its running 2.4 Gigs and nothing is changed ??
ive check the bios once again, and the new settings are saved.
what im i missing ??

do i have to do some thing more?

also this: system Memory Multiplyer is set to Auto, is thet right?

thanks

I think that you have EIST ENABLED on the second bios screen. That reduces multiplier to 6x when not under load.

Try checking your CPU speed with Orthos running (or some software that fully loads the CPU) or just turn off EIST.

I have OCZ Gold good for DDR2 1000, I will try your settings. I learned also that changing memory from NORMAL to FAST or TURBO is necessary for higher FSB.

Can you link to the exact Corsair 6400C4 you are using? I think there are more than one version.

Corsair was the best for me in the past, but I don't have so much access to it at the moment - few stores carry it at the moment near my home. I had very good results with 1GB DDR Ballistix Kit and 2GB DDR OCZ Platinum kit.

PS: Take off the "covers" on the heatsinks on the mosfet and northbridge (the one with the 6 quad and the gigabyte one). They only prevent proper cooling by the heatsink fins. Use a flat screwdriver and from the sides carefully force them up - hold the heatsink with your other hand to avoid tearing it from the mobo. The top cover comes off easily.

I can overclock to high FSB with the DQ6 (450 for example). But its no use, since the CPU clock would be too high and its very difficult to go above 3.2GHz without jacking up voltages.

I know how it feels, you great components on your hand. To troubleshot you need more components, which is not pratical sometimes. Can you get an E6300 or E6400 to try on your board? I think you would reach your targets with the Allendale CPUs. You can later sell the E6600 and have some spare money.....

What week chip do you have?

Lots of people are having issues with getting a high FSB with the E6600 chips (myslef included). I maxed out at 366x8 on my chip at stock voltages.

Are you saving the settings before exiting?

There is the option to exit without saving. It's silly, but check that.

The memory is the Corsair TWIN2X1024-6400C4. This link is to the mrmory PDF: http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/products/specs/TWIN2X1024-6400C4.pdf

Thanks for the tips on the mosfet coverings. I am going to try to find time this weekend and lap my proc. I will also squeeze in time to pop off those coverings.
