I got this mb last week and here my thoughts:
Pros:
AGP/PCI lock
Uses Nvidia SATA and IDE
Has additional 2 IDE and 2 SATA ports.

Cons:
CPU and case temp reading are too high - for me CPU is 60-64C - same setup on K8N (without S) gives me 30C
Could not make it post with Athlon 64 DTR.
Memory voltage only goes to 2.7V
Cannot use 2 sticks of OCZ PC4400 EL Gold on 200Mgh - max is 166. With one stick works.
Doesn't see my LiteOn CDRW on those additional 2 GigaRAID IDE ports - CDRW works fine on Nvidia ports.

In short - goes back

I got my K8NS (non-pro) a couple weeks ago. It is very stable but I have the same high CPU temp problem. With the stock fan installed, and ambient temp around 26C, it was ~48C at idle and ~56C under load! Such high temp drove the CPU fan over 5000rpm and it was very noisy! I replaced it with a Zalmon 7000AlCu and the temp is about the same but it is now much quieter (2500rpm). I don't dare to overclock it at this temp. And removing the CPU retention frame came with the mobo is totally painful.

These temps are surely mb problem - just like VNF3 shows super low temps this mb shows super high.
I overclocked my 3000+ retail CPU from 2Gh to 2.25 without problems.

I was having a problem changing the ram timings. Have you guys been able to do that? no one seems to know what I am talking about. Except the reviewer at tbreak. But I am still waiting to find out if he can give me the bios he used in his review. Can someone try to adjust the timings in the bios when going into the new menu after pushing ctrl+f1????? And if you can get the latencies to change can I please get a copy of your bios?????

Also clockgen works with this mb so you can adjust the multiplier down.

My default timing is 2.5-3-3-7 (512MB Corsair VS cl2.5). I have tried to change it (e.g., 2.5-3-3-6) and after reboot, there was a long beep sound and the settings returned to the default timing. I guess it's what you're talking about?

Btw, how far can you guys get for oc? Mine could run at 2150MHz (215 x 10) w/ 1.65V. The temp went up to 67C under loading yet the system still ran stablely (I tested it by running prime95). However I could not get the result as hexus.net, who could achieve 2400MHz at 1.7V:

http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD03NTE

They could even run 2200MHz at the default voltage (1.5V) but mine could not run at even 2100MHz at the default voltage (it ran fine at 1.6V though). What are you guys results?

ps. Clockgen also works for me.

From other web sites I've read that this mobo only supports 2 x single-sided memory or 1 x double-sided memory at 200MHz. With 2 x double-sided memory it only supports 166MHz.

Btw, any suggestions for the poor mobo performance of my board =( ? Is it because of my memory (Corsair Value-Select cl2.5)? TIA.

great news for me. I tried putting 2x512mb Mushkin pc-3200 2-2-2 special ram and all my problems went away. Right now I am a 3000+ at 2310mhz, multiplier 10, 2.5-2-26, freq=192.5, FSBRAM = CPU/12 so its running at the 166mhz divider.

the ram timings stick in the bios.

I bought this board 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to overclock at all until tonight. I found the f2 bios and it solved all my problems. My ram timings now save and I can overclock pretty well. I am currently running 2 512 sticks of PC400 OZ ram at 220 completely stable. That puts my 3000+ processor at 2200 Mgz and I have run prime stable for over 2 hours now. My timmings are 2.5-3-3-6. Temps are only 1C higher then when I was running at the stock speeds. Using the Zalman 7000A My temps are showing 42c Idle and 53C after two hours of Prime 95.

travanx, your memory runs at 166MHz - that is my problem though - I want mine to run at > 200MHz - I have a PC4400 memory after all.
Have you tried to set it to manual and then 200MHz in advanced chipset options? What happens?

Yeah but since my ram isnt overclocking ram, I dont expect it to do much. So basically now I ram running my chip at 2349 stable all night long running folding@home and doing some 3dmark stuff. This is pretty much running at around 196fsb at those tight timings.

But you must have read about my issues with running the corsair pc-4000 ram with this board. It just did not work. The ram timings could not be set to manual. Only with the mushkin could Iget it to manual. I am not really up to trying more ram.

Can you change your ram timings from auto to manual? If you can't I think the ram is not going to work correctly.

dimasukr,

You mentioned that you can't get a DTR to post...what bios are you using? I can't get a mobile Athlon64 to post, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do T_T. Maybe go to a shop and see if I can't borrow a different proc and flash to the beta bios.

Can anyone recommend a possible shop around the Seattle, Washington area?

Hey guys.

Just bought a K8NS Pro and a 3200+, trying to match performance from the hexus.net article.

Been perusing the thread and have a couple of general questions....

I have roughly ten different options to set in my Advanced Chipset Options menu, from CAS latency to tREF. My RAM is A-Data Vitesta, PC4000 (DDR500) [ http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-211-123&depa=1 ][ http://www.adata.com.tw/en/p-d1-03.htm ] . I have three 512MB single channel DIMMS. These modules are rated at 3-4-4-8 at 500mhz. I'm assuming this means a 250mhz FSB. I'm trying to push the K8NS Pro as close to this mark as possible, but I can't get any manual RAM timings (at 200mhz clock speed) to stick in the BIOS. There are quite a few settings and I'm not completely sure which ones even correlate to the 3-4-4-8 that the RAM is rated.

Interestly enough, the Easytune 4 software allows me to reach a stable 200mhz RAM clock speed (a 1:1 ratio on the FSB; i think). It even gives me a peek at a number of settings when I restart the machine after changing the divider setting. They are, in order of BIOS appearance: 3,11,15,4,2,8,4,3,2,4,2x3120. When I try to set the very same timings manually; which are stable under the Easytune software, I end up getting the long beep some of you were describing, followed by a boot with the default 133mhz RAM clock speed.

If anyone could tell me which of the ten RAM clock options the 3-4-4-8 correspond to, and what I should try to safely set the other options to, please add it to this discussion.

Easytune also allows me to up the DRAM voltage to 2.8v, the recommended voltage of the Vitesta modules. Both BIOS revisions peak out at 2.7v (DIMM Voltage option, +.2v selected). Does the VDDQ option in the BIOS voltage controls correspond to the DRAM voltage at all? If not, how does one up the DRAM voltage to 2.8v without using the Easytune software?

I would prefer to push the RAM and FSB to their limits of stability in the BIOS rather than the Easytune software, so I can start using Clockgen to mess with the mulitplier.

Btw, I've had the FSB up to 250mhz at a 9.5x clock multiplier, with the RAM divider set 1:1 (200mhz default clock). I had to use easytune to do this, and it was fairly stable, but I lost the multiplier change as soon as I rebooted, trapping me in a cycle of crashes (I accidentally enabled Auto load last save on restart in Easytune).

Since I started writing this thing, I've accounted for some of the memory timings:
CAS# Latency 3.0 Clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay 4 Clocks
RAS# Precharge 4 Clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) 8 Clocks
Bank Cycle Time (tRC) 11 Clocks
DRAM Idle Timer 16 Clocks

These are still only 6 of 10 possible settings, and they are the settings Easytune enabled, and will not stick if entered manually in the BIOS.

So, summing up, how can I tweak the BIOS to attain the settings that I've found will gel in Easytune; is it even worth it to use the hardware to OC?

What can I do with the extensive memory settings to get the manual settings to stick and have optimum stability; what do the remaining settings do, can anyone recommend some settings based on the info I have submitted?

What can I do within the BIOS to up the DRAM voltage to the full 2.8v; what does the VDDQ setting do?

Furthermore, I've installed the F2 Beta BIOS, but CPU-Z says I still have the F1 installed (contrary to what the bootscreen tells me).

Thanks for reading, shower me with your advice...

UPDATE: None of the Easytune settings stick past a restart either.......what a drag.

Thelonious, I used F1 and F2b BIOS and it didn't help.
I had a A64 3000 CPU around to flash a new BIOS on K8NS PRO

Well, I flashed to the F2b bios and the mobile Athlon 64 still wouldn't post ; ;. Using a 3000+ now.

Breckerfood2k4: How are you changing the CPU Multiplier via EasyTune? Doesn't budge for me. Also, when I set DRAM to divider...it also sets AGP and PCI to divider, resulting in increases -_-. Have you found a way to change the three independently? Once I had PCI locked using ClockGen, but I can't duplicate it. Which version of clockgen did you get?

I also noticed there's no option to tweak HT multiplier in the F2b bios. This is frustrating to say the least

Update: Wow...using bios F1, I set max ram clock to 166 in the bios, results in pci and agp lock. My ram's limit seems to be ~210...so I'm up to 250 HTT = 2500 MHz @_@; Sandra says it beats an FX53 @ 2.4GHz (9749 vs 10678).

2x HT multiplier
max vcore voltage, although CPU-Z reports around 1.61-1.65

CPU-Z also reports my 3000+ as a NewCastle C0 stepping, although the markings indicate a ClawHammer CG . Is there even a 3000+ & ClawHammer combo? I passed this 'dual bios' as meh earlier, but being able to switch between bios revisions can be a time saver.

One last thing for now , has anyone tried disabling the 'CPU Smart Fan Control' in the bios? I did, but my fan still doesn't run at full speed.

Can't change multiplier in easytune, had to use clockgen (NF 3 Version, listed as NF 3 150 on their website). Apparently, this version of clockgen works fine for mulitplier, but not for FSB (read the anandtech MSI K8N Neo Platinum article).

PCI and AGP still lock for me when I set the RAM to divider (Easytune). I can boot with a 200mhz RAM clock (4x HT), but the settings don't stick (also Easytune). I'm considering going back to the F1 BIOS to set the HT down.

I have the RAM running at 150 mhz right now, 245 mhz FSB, full Vcore voltage, +.2v DDR voltage (all F2 BIOS). The clock multiplier is at 9.0x (clockgen). Nvidia system utility gives me some weird numbers. I'll put the Nvidia numbers on the left, cpu-z on the right:

Voltages:
CPU 1.4/1.7
AGP 1.5/1.5
MEM 2.7/2.7
NF 1.5/1.5
AUX 1.5/1.5

Speeds:
MEM 490 mhz/183.7 mhz
HT (HTT in CPU-Z) 980 mhz/245 mhz
AGP 66 mhz/NA
CPU 2204.997/2205 mhz
CPU MULT 9.0x/9.0x

Do you think setting the HT multiplier in the F1 BIOS down would allow me to push the FSB even more?
Or should I try to get the RAM (3 chips) to run at 166 mhz?

I'd appreciate anyone's advice.

Also, what the hell does VDDQ do?

like i said in some other thread or maybe this one. Gigabyte really doesnt support ram above pc-3200. As well as the corsair ram didnt work for me. The timings stuck when I switched to the Mushkin PC-3200. I wish there was some more info on all the different bios things to change. Maybe they will fix the bios???? I would say email gigabyte tech support.

One thing is noticed with the F1 bios is I can't get a PCI lock if the leave 'CPU OverClock in MHz' to the default 200MHz. Overclocking by 1MHz is enough to initiate the lock. At least this is as seen from clockgen.

So what exactly is the most important setting for performance? High HTT/Bus Speed? High memory clock? I can get higher HTT but lower total MHz.

I think tweaking the memory timings is next, but damn...all those settings are overwhelming. I have little idea on how they map to the '2-3-3-11' convention.

i have to say I am very happy with this motherboard once I switched the ram. If you have ram that doesnt work right on this board than it really sucks.
