Hey sne35,

I suspect you need to use the correct controller driver before you can access the whole disk...

Have you had any luck?

Hey all,

Well I broke down and purchased some new Geil memory from eBay. I'm told it's 2x512mb 6 3 3 2.0

But I'll know more once I receive it .

I'll let you all know how it behaves.

I use Geil memory for some months now, And it's perfect.
In Bios you kan set the timing to 200Mhz. Vram voltage to 2.6V (+0.1) and the timings are 2.5-4-4-8

Hey all,

I received the Geil memory... I was disappointed to see that it was the 2.5-4-4-8 variety... I am sending it back.

But for an experiment I put it in my machine... and it works fine at 200fsb. I was actually able to run 1:1 up to 216mhz. It was slower at the looser timings then my Muskin ram at 195fsb.

So I guess I'll be happy were I am at.

Hope this helps someone else.

The bios F5 seems unsupported right?
GigaRAID BIOS that comes with the new F6 is back to version 1.41, whereas F5 came with version 1.70.
And my hdd (on gigaRAID) has big problem (cannot read hdd seldom) in F5 bios but no problem at F6 bios..

Heck no this is not normal. Sounds like a funky connection.

Make sure cabling is good.

You can also try disabling automatic fan speed control on the bios page... PC Health Status, CPU Smart Fan Control.

Hey all,

I have purchased some 2x512mb OCZ PC3200, Platinum Rev2.0 (5 2 2 2.0).

If this doesn't work well, this board is gone. And Gigabyte, when this guy walks... he doesn't come back.

Current ban list: Creative labs & Via... although to be fair in about another 5 years I might try another VIA product... .

Hey everyone- I have had this board for about two months and at first was totally displeased, but I have never been let down by the previous 5 giga-byte boards I have had, so I decided to stick with it.

I finally have had some decent results ^_^

My usual Setup for the Bios is 166 max mem, 220x 11 FSB (2.42ghz), ram timings 2-2-2-11, and 2T disabled- That setup holds stable for 24 hours on prime95's torture test. Voltages are 1.550 vcore and 2.8(max) mem.

The second setup I tried is- 200max mem, 218 x 11 (2.398ghz), ramtimings 2.5-2-2-11 and 2t enabled- Voltages are the same as above. To my Surprise this also held stable for 24 hours. My memory is effectivley running at 436mhz..

My setup is-
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle
GA-K8NS pro bios version F2 (I found this Bios gives the best results)
Corsair Twinex XMS 3200 XL 2x512 (the big mother black ones with Activity LDS)
Antec True Power 550w PSU

it is only when im in POST, CPU Fan stops. i guess it the cool and quiet feature of AMD 64, and ive installed the latest bios f6.but I have a question about the bios, if i enable the cpu fan failed. it always beep. its annoying...im a real noobie about this board and processor. btw tried 2 MoBo. and still the same start and stop CPU fan in booting. tnx..

Hello,

Unfortunately my GA K8NS Pro just died. Does anyone know how to RMA it to gigabyte?

Thanks!

thanks for the intrest Karl, yeah it was just a driver thing, so now that i am up and running i have the 200 gigs partisioned at 10gigs for windows and the rest storage....

everything has been running great for me... i would suggest the samsung mem....it runs great at 200mhz and i kept it stable running the fsb at 216 without change any voltage and it ran for about 20min at 220 without change voltage, maybe soon i will get brave and up the voltage and see what happens

i was also wondering about the ram timings i am not sure which ones to set. to get some of the numbers i have seen in the posts 2.5-2-2-11 for instance just seems like there are a lot more options then just 4 things to set...(however i am a real newbie with them since i have never oc much)

i am running F6 bios if that helps

does easytune actually work? i have tried to make changes with it but with no luck when it reboots the changes are not taking effect. (yes i have clicked the check mark that says apply overclock on next reboot)

any its seems quick to me even notice able over my 2600 which ran at 2090mhz

Hey sne35,

That's great that you figured it out. Good deal.

I'm excited about my new memory. From Newegg, should be here by Wednesday.

I'll post back with how it's working out.

Easytune works great for me. I finally got it fully working by rebooting my machine and setting htt to 201 and agp to 67 and then rebooting. I leave these setting at one over and from WinXP I can change multipliers (down only), htt (and consequently 'fsb'), and voltages of cpu and memory... very sweet.

I would be in cloud nine if I could make it to 216 at 8 2 3 2.0 at 1T timings.

Only a couple more days...

I'm planning on moving my 2x512MB PC3500 Muskin BLII over into my XE phase cooler. I'm getting ready to do an eBay auction and sell it , I will be sorry to see it go...

Hey all,

Okay I am seriously eating crow .

The new OCZ memory arrived today (2x512mb pc3200 5 2 2 2.0).

Plugged it in, no issues at all running 200fsb at 1T timing.

I now agree that this issue must be a weird Muskin/Gigabyte compatability issue.

Right now I'm running 11.0x 223 at 6 2 3 2.0 at 2.7vdc with memory synched with cpu and at 1T timing.

So at least for me... buying very expensive, but wonderful memory, was the answer.

hey karl congratz on your memory.

i have the 64 3000+ processor so i am limited to 10 as a multiplier right meaning that i cant go above ten since it is locked up but not down if i remember correctly

so far i havent had an issue with my ram.....that i have noticed

should i use the bios or easytune to try and overclock, with easytune or the bios is there a way to set my ram at 200 with out changing the cpu setting or vise versa.

and where would be a good place to start. at what settings at stock/default ram sets to 166 and 10x200 which gives me a reading of 2010 or 2009mhz on easytune (how does that work?)

Hey sne35,

Hmmm, interesting question. In BIOS set your ram timings to manual after booting at 200 so that the timings are very conservative for <200 operation. Set memory to 166. Boot and then use Easytune to find the maximum clock speed. Go slowly, check stability with Prime95 blend... and keep going. I like to go in blocks of 5mhz. Maybe stay to 1.6v Vcore or lower. That's what I have found to work.

With a good heatsink and fan, you might be able to reach 240htt which would give you 2.4ghz and your memory would be back to 200fsb. At this level, or along the way you might have to turn the transport channel down to 3x from 4x (I might have said that poorly )

After you find the maxium core frequency you'll have to decide how you want to run your memory. You basically have the choice of the way you just did. Or reduce the frequency of your cpu and try and run 1:1. So if you can run 2.4ghz CPU-wise, try synchronizing memory and htt (set max memory to 200) and start increasing htt in 5mhz blocks. You may have to reboot and go into bios and relax memory timings along the way (5 2 2 2.0 to 6 2 3 2.0 to 6 2 4 2.0 or 6 3 3 2.0 then ... you get the idea) a lot of playing around to find the sweet spot .

Probably hard as heck to figure out what I am talking about.... sorry... ask if something is unclear.

Good luck.

I am currently at 10.5x 235 at 6 2 3 2.0 1T and 1:1. and I am tickled pink.

Regards,

Karl

So what is the work around for the DDR400 running as DDR333 on this chipset? I just put in 3x512MB of Corsair XMS PC3200 and they only run at 2x166Mhz. If I try to set the ram to 200Mhz in the BIOS the system won?t boot up. But one stick of the memory can run at 2x200Mhz if its just one stick.

Honestly I don?t know anything about CAS timing and stuff. The memory said it would ?Boot automatically using the Xtra-Low latency values of 2-2-2-5?, whatever that means. I just want to know if I can get the stuff to run at 400Mhz. Using F6 BIOS now. Thanks

Got some news for y'all....the memory problems you are running into are more likely caused by the on-die memory controller in your CPU than the Gigajunk board itself. I've got a GA-K8NSNXP-939 with an Athlon64 3500, and I've tried 3 different types/brands of memory. NONE of them would run stable 200 speeds in dual channel config. If I tried to run dual at 200, I had to GREATLY relax the timings on the RAM. AMD has a list of supported memory modules(chips) but what they fail to mention for the most part is that the AMD64 processors are designed to run at max 166(per channel) when using dual channel. Yes, even though they SAY that it'll work with up to 3200 RAM. Bunch of bullshit if you ask me. It apparently has something to do with the step coding needing to be updated(from D to E), but right now no one is willing to admit that they've been hiding something from the general public who has bought this shit. Have fun getting your nice new overpriced systems to work LIKE THEY SHOULD!!

cough cough.. bullshit.

My on-die memory controller is the same as yours and it runs every stick of memory I've thrown at it on my epox 8kda3j board.

This is a board specific problem, not an on-die memory controller problem.

I'm not saying the board isn't at fault at all....it obviously has problems. But I'm not just blowing hot air either...

Just got off the phone with AMD tech support - apparently, the memory controller is not guaranteed to support dual channel DDR400 regardless of whether it it 2 modules or 4. Timings should be backed down to 333Mhz when using dual channel. Now what pisses me off about this is that the motherboard companies still advertise their products as supporting dual channel DDR400. Obviously they have been able to get it to work with some degree of success... And Gigabyte seems to have done it to a lesser degree. I mean I'm not even trying to overclock. I just want to use what I thought were "stock settings." Wouldn't this qualify as false advertising?

I think AMD should've been more clear when saying that the on-die memory controller in their Athlon64 processors was compatible with 3200(DDR400) RAM modules. Now we have to be told by their tech support that the on-die controller is "not guaranteed" to work at DDR400 speeds in dual channel. I consider it misleading...

Hey all,

It's my opinion... that it is a compatability issue.

Whether to blame the motherboard or memory is beyond my knowledge-base.

I know I was stuck at 195fsb, with two sets of memory I tried. I bought new OCZ memory and it works wonderfully over 235fsb (+20%)

I guess I come away wondering what's up. I was already to fully blame the motherboard... now I don't know.

I know in my case, I am happy with my setup.

However, if a friend of mine was building a similar system... I'd steer them away from this board... sorry Gigabyte. In this regard, I agree with slag.

Does this board have the NVIDIA Soundstorm chip?

I don't know what that is, but the only nVidia chip is has is the nforce 3 250. It has a realtek sound chip.

Well it's been shown that it works fine at dual channel 400. "not guaranteed" I think what that really means is that not all motherboard makers design their boards to support memory configurations above the specifications even if it can work. Gigabyte has said they prefer to stick to AMD's specifications rather than to design their boards according to what can work.

I have Kingston value ram 1GB 2x512MB kit. Running at 200mhz with 2-3-3-8 on K8NS-Pro with F6 bios.
And the cool part is, it is rated as CAS3 memory.

Yeah but what I'm saying is that Gigabyte advertises their GA-K8NSNXP-939 as a dual channel DDR400 board, but not many people have been able to figure out how to accomplish this and keep their system stable. But whatever...I'm just ranting.
