GA-P35-DS3L (rev. 2.0) CPU Support List Does that help?

Thanks I actually wasn't sure if mine was a northwood (unsupported) or prescott (supported) but I think prescott.

is yours a 775 or 478 cpu? not trying to offend but i don't know your knowledg...

that sucks....any way to flash w/ only a 45nm cpu on hand? will it even post?

Second that question. Can you use a 45nm chip to post far enough to allow us to flash to the new bios?

I asked Gigabyte that very question and the response was that I would need another 775 chip that was supported in order to flash it. But I also had the F3 Bios. I didn't actually try an E8400 to see if it worked since mine wont be here till Friday. I ended up borrowing a CPU from work to flash it.

i gave them a call and they said it would need a different non 45nm cpu, they would do it but you need to send the m/b to them

No offense cuz I know I'm a noob. That's what I need to figure out. I should stop posting until I get home to that computer and simply just run CPU Z. That should tell me right?

If it does work then I'm buying this. I love gigabyte boards. My old 8KNXP which ran my current processor died on me due to a fluke. I been looking for a decent interim board that will work with both my P4 and soon to purchase quad 6600. I didn't want to have to buy a board and replace it a month later. I assume this board will be fine to run the quad 6600, Raptors, 8800 GTS 512?

it will support that, but know there are prescotts in 478 and 775. you have ddr2 ram? again, cpu-z will tell you

No DDR2.
I never got a chance to check my machine last night. Last minute case came in at work and I didn't get home till like midnight. Won't be able to check it tonight either and I really want to order this board =/

My machine:
P4 2.8ghz 800fsb w/HT (I don't recall it saying Advanced HT in bios or anywhere) (It was OC'd to 3.2 on old MB, stock speed 2.8 on current temporary MB)
400mhz Hyperx 512mb x4 (NOT DDR2)
AGP8x X1950 Pro
Dell crappy MB (used to be a Gigabyte 8KNXP until MB shorted due to a bad USB charger)
SB Audigy 2 Platinum w/dock
Zalman copper CPU cooler 7000 series (mushroom) -Will that fit ok? The Northbridge cooler looks like it could be in the way =/ Also will the quad processors be different size and need diff coolers then my P4? I'd need to use my 7000 AIcu for the P4 then I would buy a new one I guess for the 6600 quad.

I want to order a 8800GTS 512mb and 4gb 800mhz ram today. I don't want to get a quad 6600 yet and hoping the P4 should feed the 8800GTS ok without too much bottlenecking until I get a quad 6600 in about a month.

Then your p4 is a socket 478.

BOOOOOO

Oh well, I was planning on getting a quad 6600 anyways. Guess I will have to wait to do it all at once.

the only thing w/ waiting is that prices will come down and speed will go up just out of curiosity, why are you stuck on wanting a quad?

as far as the zalman cooler, they make an adapter for it to fit on the skt775 cpus, they are ~$3 but $4shiping from neweegg

I certainly hope that's not true for the new boards. I've got a DS3L already on it's way and nothing but a E8400 to put into it. FWIW, it sounds like foghorn67 didn't have any problems with a DS3R board in this tread. (I don't know how to link to the exact post.) But that could be a Rev 2.1 board, while 2.0 is the last Rev. for the DS3L boards according to Gigabyte's page.

Newegg now $99.99 PLUS shipping
It clearly states for the rev 2,0 DS3L in the CPU list that it 8400/8500 needs the F8a BETA bios
I seriously doubt theat Gig would send out a mobo with a beta bios
So, my bet is on the need to flash - with the "L" board
Both rev 2 and 2.1 of the DS3R need the F11 bios, which is prob the current shipping mobo bios

Yeah, but I was assuming I could still use the E8400 to flash it. Apparently not, according to the comments above. Of course, I'll give it a try, anyway, when the board gets here.

I have already been there done that with a bios not yet supported AMD chip.
After booting the screen just sits there - black - nothing
However, if the bios just MISrecognises the chip you are home free,. but as you mentioned, the others say no.

In the no screen images case, you could blind flash with a floppy and an autoexec.bat file to start the flash by itself during boot
If the floppy lite fllickers with recognition (and it should) while booting you are good to go
I would tell you exactly how to do it, but if you have to learn it, its best not to do it - heh

Please update when you do as this is the route I am looking to take. I don't want to buy a cheap cpu just to flash the bios. I guess I could get a cheap used one to do it though.

A couple of people here even installed Windows Vista without updating the BIOS first. It looks like they didn't know it wasn't supposed to work.

Here's another guy running the E8400 with the (old) F6 BIOS

Don't worry, be happy!

Didn't see this before I posted but that sounds great!

@mellondust: I didn't forget about you! And I've got good news!

I'm not having any problems running my E8400 on my P35-DS3L Rev 2.0 board. It came with the F7 BIOS (F6 should be just as good) and I haven't updated it to F8a yet.

Since my new hard drive hasn't arrived yet, on my old computer, I created an "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" (its based on Bart's PE and Win XP) and burned it. Then I booted the P35-DS3L using an extra CD-ROM drive. It had no problems. I ran CPU-Z and it recognized the E8400. See my post at the top of the second page in this thread for some of the CPU-Z output. Gary Key recently said

BTW, AFAIK, the only difference F6 / F7 has to do with > 1 TB drives. F6 is the one that added support for the 45nm Yorkfield processors (and apparently partial support for the Wolfdale processors).
