Hello

So i got a new 580 today as i wanted to test SLI in BF4. My budget is limited so i figured that was the way to go.

Now i am facing heat problems instead and starting to regret my purchase!
The motherboard has 2 x16 pci-e and one 8x pci-e.

Is there some way to swich the 16x and 8x pci-e ? i need the space between to cool down the top card. Its about 3-5 mm between the cards .Also the design seams pretty bad on both 580 coolers

2XGigabyte GTX 580

What can i do to solve this issue? If i run it in 8x .How much performance drop will i have?

You are best off using a 100mm SLI bridge, and placing the 2nd 580 in the PCIe x8 slot. You lose very little performance (less than 5%) and it won't get too hot. I've been doing the same with my 680's.

Thanks! Well this kind of sux because my case is missing 1 opening to use the 8x slot . I'm in such a trouble!

I searched around for a good case at the time I decided I need to do this. I settled on an early version of the Silverstone Raven 2. It has great airflow, isn't loud and had the extra slot. The newer version removed that extra slot.

There are other enclosures that support that extra slot.

No easy solution to this because Gigabyte took a stupid pill before designing their 1st gen x58 boards. New case, sell cards or new board are your options. Personally, I would sell both cards and go with a single gtx 680 or a 7970.

To be fair about this, the 1st gen x58 boards all did the same thing, as all previous motherboards and brands did previously. The first boards to start spacing their PCIe slots further a part, at least as a sort of general practice, happened after that gen.

Its not about spacing them further apart. Its that Gigabyte was the only company to have the first pci-e slot on the third expansion slot instead of the second expansion slot from the top. By doing this they made the third pci-e slot useless for anyone that doesn't have an 8 slot case(which pretty much eliminate all midtower cases). Also there were a couple of 1st gen board that did have the extra space in between pci-e slots. The Asus P6T Deluxe and Asrock x58 Extreme come to mind. But yeah the majority didn't.
