Not bad at all. I've been very tempted to give i7 a try. This doesn't help me stay away.

I'm trying to hold off till there's a Shuttle barebones. With work I move every 12-18 months and it's been convienient to only run shuttles and laptops.

I've read it's a good solid board, but I'm holding out for a better price on the UD5 by Gigabyte.

Similar specs and board, but it can handle SLI as well as Crossfire. If I spend more than $150 on a mobo, I want it to be a good one with some solid futureproofing when I upgrade my GPU.

IMHO, the jump from dual to quad is pretty remarkable.

My E2180 (3Ghz) with a 4870 runs Fallout 3 in 1680x1050 max'd out..when do you see a big difference- higher res or something..?

I don't think he was referring to gaming. For gaming, I think it's till better to get a core 2 duo then any quads for the price that is.

Unless your games and apps make use the the extra cores, I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading at this point really. There aren't many games or apps to use multi_CPUs, much less use them properly.

There's only a handful of games that take advantage of quad but I know in a couple months, I'm going to get a quad just cus I want to.

I just went through the same decision making process.

Going i7.
If you look around enough and use Live Search, etc. you can get a very good deal on a mobo/ram/cpu combo that is not really much more than a good quad core setup.

I just got a mobo (Asus p6T) - 224
Ram ( 6 GB of Kingston 1333 ddr) - 101
Then got 7% off for that via Live Search via Super Biiz so total was only $317 or something including shipping.

The i7 920 is anywhere from $245 (with tax at Micro Centers) to $285 shipped depending on where you get it.

So- you can get into the Core i7 platform for $560 or so (even cheaper if you go the Gigabyte deal route).

I did not see huge difference in platform pricing, especially with the Ram coming down so quickly. ( I got the Kingston as it is on the QVL for this board). 6GB for $102 bucks is 17 buck a Gig. Cheap!

The other thing is maybe one will be able to drop another CPU in the mobo a couple years down the road-you might get lucky, and then extend your build for awhile.
