I'm building a new rig for gaming/3d editing, and in all of my research the P35 chipset seems popular. Given its advanced age, is it still a feasible choice for such a computer, specifically when used with a Q6600 and 9800 GX2?
Advanced age? It's just getting good now. Took them this long to fix the damned BIOSes. Double boots, corruption, RAM incompatibilities... P35 turned out to be a bigger mess than 965P. Maybe it's just that there's so much hardware on the market now that no one knows WTF is going on anymore. Vista doesn't help matters either.
Something to consider... the P35 is PCI-e 1.0, while the 9800 is 2.0. Supposedly they are compatible, but there are rare instances (like mine) where they just wont play nice. I ended up having to upgrade my mobo. Went with the Asus P5N-D with dual PCI-e 2.0 slots. Seems to be a great mobo except for some noise on the audio jacks.
