Again, heat (from northbridge or whatever) is a nonfactor if you don't overclock. If a board overheats at stock, then it's defective. Spending $200+ on a board just to run a chip at stock is pretty uneconomical. You're much better off getting a cheap board with a better CPU.

Burner27, honestly I'm not sure that the board needs the backplate if you are not overclocking. However if you are not overclocking then really the extra cooling does not seem to be needed... the copper fins on the VRM areas do not even get warm, and the massive copper towers on the northbridge also are usually fairly cool to the touch with only medium case airflow. Unless you need the extra features I am not sure that I would suggets forking out that much more for a DQ6, even during overclocking my board stays cool, so cool that I'm actually worried if the northbridge cooler is even making proper contact, but I don't want to pull off all that copper to find out it was fine.

I appreciate the comments. I have one more question. Newegg says the warranty is 1 year but Gigabyte's website says 3 years. Which is it?

I would assume 1 year through newegg then the remaining 2 years through gigabyte. I am personally a proud owner of the DQ6. I love it, especially since i had it before it was released to the public at the price of $170CAD muahaha.

Another thing, remember CTRL+F1 allows you to change the memory timings.

anyone try a p35 gigabyte with a quad core? I'm trying to decide if I can get by with a p35 ds3r for a Q6600 or if I'll need to step up to a ds4 or p5k deluxe.

Because i am concerned about heat.

Why get a P35 chipset-based mobo anyways then? It draws more power and generates more heat than prior-generation chipsets.

You want less heat? Get an 865G/865PE-based mobo, they don't even have active northbridge cooling.

I have a 975x chipset now that is committing suicide on me. No reason for me to spend the same amount of money on older technology. Besides, i like the fact that there are sata devices off the ICH9R.

I've had mine for a little under 2 weeks and it has worked great. The downside is the cold boot issue still exists. I have given up with my OCZ ram and am swapping out for Crucial within a day or 2, will let you know how that goes.

Is it just me or has all mention of P35 mobos gone from the Gigabyte web site?

I usually check out http://www.gigabyte.com.au/Pro...ec.aspx?ProductID=2533 every couple of days but the DS3P Product Overview is gone as well as news items relating to the P35. In fact the Intel P35 does not appear as an option when searching for motherboards by chipset.

Weird...

Hi Dulanic,

Is the cold boot issue you are having the same one I referred to in an earlier post - computer starts then stops and then boots when overclocking. If so I would be interested in finding out if changing your RAM helps, especially as I was considering replacing my Corsair for OCZ.

Although I should not complain about my Corsair - I just tested it at DDR 1050 speed @ 2.0 volts and it passed Memtest and Orthos (2 hours) with no problems - not bad for chips that started life as DDR 667.

Cheers

I just bought some crucial ballistic 6400 and the default voltage on it is 2.2v. Will the DS3R automatically detect that or would I need to manually increase the voltage in the bios?

Thanks jjsole.

I notice the P35-DS3P has been replaced by the P35-DS3P (rev 1.x).
Anyone know what changes were made to the board?
I presume I can use any updated BIOS for the rev 1.x on my rev 1.0 board?

Thanks!

Hi everyone, I just recently purchased the GA-P35-DQ6 however I can't get the darn thing to boot. It's not giving my bios error beeps, the whole thing seems to boot fine power wise, HDs spin up etc, but no post confirmation beep and no video output.
The only thing I can thing of is for some reason, my 3-pin fans refuse to spin up when hooked up to the board's 4-pin headers. Unfortunately, since I'm using a tuniq tower, that means the cpu fan refuses to spin up at boot when attached to it's designated header. it jerks slightly when powering down though.
Now I've tried both the tt120 fan and a 3pin case fan in both 4 pin slots, neither works, but both work when hooked up to any of the board's 3pin headers. My only guess at this time as to why the system won't boot is the possibility of it thinking there is no cpu fan and thus refusing to boot without beeping any error codes.
So is that a possible explanation? Is there any way to fix it if it is without buying a fan with a 4 pin connector, and when the staff here at anandtech reviewed the board with their tt120, did this happen?

*edit*
I just remembered the stock intel hs fan had a 4 pin connector. This makes the problem odder however, as it also refused to spin up when plugged into the Sys_fan2 4 pin slot, but worked fine in the 3pin nb_fan slot.
What in the world could be going on?
*edit*

Thanks for any help.

While I have the P35-DQ6, the board was unable to boot at the correct 2.2v required to run my Crucial Balistix 8500 RAM. The board also does not seem able to set a correct memory ratio if overclocked, both will need to be set manually. I resorted to doing the usual 2.1v RAM boot, modify the RAM voltage, then switch out for my Ballistix kit. If you are going to run your Ballistix RAM near or above DDR2-1,000Mhz I can guarantee you will need to use "Option 2" for the RAM DLL setting in the BIOS as well to retain stability.

SuicideReign, 3pin headers are designed to be used in the 4pin fan slots, just make sure the notches align correctly. I can guarantee the fan headers are not your problem, I do not even use my CPU fan header and my board boots fine.

What voltage is your RAM rated at, because it sounds like your board cannot auto set the voltage high enough to boot. If you have 2.1v or lower rated RAM available switch it out with your current kit, and change the BIOS RAM voltages manually before using 2.2v or higher rated voltage memory.

@ Kougar, I've worked on it the past couple of hours and at this point can safely say it's not ram, it does the same thing whether I have the ballistix officially 2.2V stick in, the generic 1.7-1.8V DDR2 800 stick in, or no ram at all. Here's the deal, as long as the board and the GPU get power it does its spin up and idle routine. I took the board out of the case, sat it on some cardboard, took everything out but gpu, (cpu, ram, add-in cards, all out) and it did the same thing. Reseated cpu and ram, same thing. (obviously cmos clearing and bios battery removal also featured extensively in the list of tried solutions) unless someone knows the exact solution, I think the only thing I have left to do is rma.

I missed the idling part... if it was the RAM it would continually loop on and off. Are you sure you don't have any other PCIe or PCI video card to try on that rig? Did you hook a PC speaker up to it for possible error beeps?

I'm rmaing it, yeah, I swapped out every possible component with working ones other than the cpu, but the cpu had worked fine in the previous rig, and yes i had the pc speaker on, that's how I knew it gave beep codes when the gpu was not in. Thanks for trying though.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the importance of sticking to the "memory supported list" for the p35-ds2r? Is it legit or just a deal gigabyte has with the other mfrs? If it is a serious thing, can someone recommend a good quality 2x1gb set that is supported by the mobo? (money is a factor)

Originally I was looking at the G. Skill 2x1gb ddr2-800 for $90

thanks

I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 and 2GB of DDR2-800 Kingston RAM. I'm not a gamer. My main application is video editing and I want to spead up the rendering and encoding process...

Wow this is dead on to my situation... Exactly same hardware, same requirements, (same) first post! I have built my share of systems, even for city governments... sadly I have never OC'd anything. I think I remember it being easy, with only a few options to deal with - on systems I saw tweeked out back in the day! I am mightly confused about how to do a basic, reliable OC on my system. I am pretty sure my hardware is good enough, to OC w/ air cool only what do you think my target should be 3Ghz? PLEASE could some one step me through it?

Vital specs:
Main: Intel E6600 Core Duo, Gigbyte GA-P35-DS3P MB (Rev1), 2GB Patriot Extreme PC2-6400, Thermaltake toughpower 750 Watt PS, SATA Raid 5
Case: Cooler Master CMmedia Series 280
Dispaly: ATI All in wonder VE 64 MB expansion card(MPEG hardware encoding)
(haa ha yes its a pci but $30 new ok by me)

Cooling (all air) 4 fans:
2x Noctua Austian made 120mm
1x stock CM 120mm fan
1x 100mm fan w/ Sythe Mine CPU cooler
Vents in the case

idle both cores 22-23 (digital) on a warm night
Orthos 12hrs, max 44-45 either core

I do not expect to OC like mad, however... lets see what the b*tch can do!!!

Just how many people are interested in a Gigabyte overclocking how-to article? I'm not trying to be rude but it looks like I could spend days just trying to help people... if there is enough interest I can look into getting one written up, but it wouldn't happen overnight as it would be indepth and published on a website. Any thoughts? Would having to wait for the article kill the interest?

Run with it, I'll be buying in about a month, no doubt it will come in handy

Phhh overclocking the gigabyte boards is easy.... don't forget u need to hit CTRL+F1 in the main bios screen to unlock the memory options...

Just set your divider to 2.00 (aka 1:1). keep the multiplier at the highest setting, ramp fsb by 5 mhz increments. Til u can't boot. It will then reset itself to the last known fsb. run windows... if unstable (which is should be) add voltage in smallest increments. Assuming you are using a C2D. add until u get til about 1.4v ish.. if still unstable then start decreasing the fsb slowly until it is. Then tighted ram timings, mainly the CAS timing. Add voltage if needed.

Yes i know this guide sucks and is semi backwards, but whatever if someone looking for a small overclock, this will get the job done.
