Any thoughts? Would having to wait for the article kill the interest?

I would be very interested and think it would be a really nice resource for people here. Myself, I haven't o/c'd a system for a couple years (4800x2 ddr1), and seem to have a lot of catching up to do with the settings and o/c methods of the latest boards etc.

Regarding the ballistix pc8500 issues that you had...do you think they will exist with the ga-p35c board as well? I have the 8500 ram already, but haven't yet made a final choice on the board.

I understand how you feel. Having worked as desktop support, then Network support, then Domain/web admin I have spent much of my waking hours helping people but then again I was gettin' paid

My side is that I have joined three forums just to try to OC this system, I made my cheap a$s web page to help folks help me,

http://www.thatmetalbox.com/item/MediaComputerBuild/

honestly I have searched the www on and off for 2 weeks to find the answers myself... I am *usually* very adept at that.....
I of course can redily find the concept expalined intellictually but as far as my Bios+F1 OC options, I cant translate the general instructions I find to what keystrokes I must make. I have no background on OC to draw from

Any DDR2 rated memory with the specs it needs, which is your typical garden variety ram should be fine.

All companies put up a specs list for ram, it's all nonsense.

So any reviews out there yet to read how well this board is doing, etc...?

Just set your divider to 2.00 (aka 1:1). keep the multiplier at the highest setting, ramp fsb by 5 mhz increments. Til u can't boot. It will then reset itself to the last known fsb. run windows... if unstable (which is should be) add voltage in smallest increments. Assuming you are using a C2D. add until u get til about 1.4v ish.. if still unstable then start decreasing the fsb slowly until it is. Then tighted ram timings, mainly the CAS timing. Add voltage if needed.

Yes i know this guide sucks and is semi backwards, but whatever if someone looking for a small overclock, this will get the job done.

Ahhh, I'll wait for a more detailed guide, you have top notch equipment and watercooling, yet only 2.8 ghz? E4300 or not, you should be 3.0 or better. I suspect you are waiting for the 7/22 Intel price drop, as your CPU makes no sense compared to the rest of the equipment.

No disrespect

Of all the ram compatability issues I've seen the most of while reading the multitude of newegg mobo reviews (for different p35 mobos), OCZ problems came up the most (and then a couple body slams for mushkin), altho was particularly finicky with the asus p35 boards. Crucial Ballistix (6400...not a lot of 8500 reviews yet) got a lot of love everywhere tho, so I went with it.

Thanks for your help, I think I got something going on here...

Started memory was 2:3 now 1:1, 3.256GhZ after setting cpu host clock control to 362, (I went up 2 steps: +16 then up +80)

Do my numbers seem usual? Is there something else I should do? Im pretty exicted well drakore I guess you had a hand in deflowering me, I hope it was good for you but at 3,256,000,000 strokes a second I was done and gone before your heart beat once I was already back home smokin and running orthos... hmmmmm

-my idle temps are the SAME (22, 23^) as stock config...
-under orthos max temps up from 42-44^ to 46-48^
You can see my results: http://www.thatmetalbox.com/it...uterBuild/howsthis.gif
Does this mean I have more room upwards or should I stay put at these settings, what say you, those of you in the know?....

Hey guys I just built a GA-P35-DQ6 and its seems to be working OK other than the boot "hang" and sometimes the CPU fan stops but the zerotherm heatsink is doing its job well enough with the case fans. Here are my basics for now:

GA-P35-DQ6 mobo

e6320 cpu

2 sticks of OCZ 1066MHz DDR2
EPP 5-5-5-15
(CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)

zerotherm btf80 (barely fit in there- does BTF mean "bend the fins?")

P180 case- wanted one of these for a long time and its a great case but the lack of 3/4 pin fan connectors for mobo control seems like an oversight. May try to find a way to add them.

@Kougar - I think there are a lot of people who would appreciate a guide. I havent really had any need to OC since I bought a PIII coppermine but I got the e6320 hoping to see what this core2 value is all about. My games were finally starting to tax the trusty ole 3500+ athlon I use for gaming so I really want to see if the dual cpu can make a big difference. First impression is that this mobos feature could live up to all the love/hype Gigabyte has been getting since the P965 series arrived. I love forward to joining the 3G club. *crosses fingers*

Lightzout, since you are using 8500 speed RAM I would suggest you use "Option 2" for the memory DLL setting in the BIOS, it is on the MIT page. Before ya do you might try running Memtest+ 1.7v and seeing if it finds any issues.... my system was not fully stable until I changed to Option 2 with my 8500 speed Ballistix. It installed windows just fine, but it still wasn't stable and only Memtest gave me any proof of it.

Hi guys, I just put my new rig together tonight. GA-P35-DS3R + E6320. I want to overclock a wee bit, but my main goal is probably to get it to 1:1 so it's stable. Can anyone point me in the right direction or shoot me PM?

Any reason why it's only recognizing 3.5 gigs of ram?

Are you using a 32-bit operating system? 32-bit operating systems cannot address a full 4GB of system memory.

netjack- here is a good way to compare various models comparison chart

Thanks Kougar -
I havent had any isues since enabling Option2.

My earlier problems were solved after installing xpsp2 before unpacking the chipset packages. It took a while to get all the latest drivers installed but I have been idling at ~26c for the last two days.

I think i will have to uninstall icool which underclocks to save energy. Not a bad feature but now I am eager to see how much more performance I may get playing games using a P35 platform after 2 years with a 939 system.

Where should i start to ramp up the system and what apps should i use (or not use/disable for that matter) There are several different apps included but i think you may have done it manually. Right now I am going to pour over the booklet and bios menu (flashed to v4 from main site) then maybe start with easy tune or one of the noob friendly apps. I plan to keep posting as I see new or remarkable results.

I understand multiplier basics but memory timing and voltages are still vague here. My last build only needed a minor voltage bump and i left timings to set auto/spd.

I'm looking into buying a Gigabyte P35-DS3R and a Q6600 to replace my Gigabyte 965P-DQ6 and E6600, but I'd really love to get another Zalman CNPS7700CU heatsink/fan as my current one has been quite good to me (even after being a pain to install on the DQ6... Crazy Cool ftl). Does anyone with one of these boards know how well the "bowl" heatsinks tend to fit?

It fits on my DQ6 with decent space between the northbridge heatsink and the fins, but I'm a bit worried that the DS3R's heatsink is too tall and I'll have to go with the 92mm rather than the 120mm.

Hello Mr. Aikouka.

I recently installed one of the new Zalman 8700 coolers on a GA-G33M-DS2R board. I had to nip a few fins off the NB heatsink on the side closest to the CPU socket (no big deal, and very easy to do), and that 8700 cooler then fit like a charm.

I have a Zalman 7700 cooler on another PC, and I can tell you that the new 8700 cooler is MUCH BETTER (has heatpipes embedded in the fins), than the 7700 ever was on its best day. I can OC an E6600 to 3.45 on normal voltage settings and the 8700 cooler just works like a charm.

If you're considering a new Zalman cooler for a limited space environment, then the 8700 is the one to get. The only source I could find for one (a few weeks ago) was Sharka Computers on the web.

Hope that's some help. TheBeagle

I'm wondering if the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 supports memory hole remapping. I read somewhere that someone was running 4 GB memory on this board and did see all of the 4 GB RAM in windows without using any remapping settings in the BIOS. Does the DS3 have auto remapping?

I also was wondering if anyone has had any problems running Corsair XMS2-6400 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 4-4-4-12 Xtreme memory on this board. I plan to use 4 GB of these.

I found the cooler on their website ( http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/pr...w.asp?idx=277&code=009 ), but I haven't found it on any store that I know of. I ended up going with the 92mm CNPS7000 yesterday as I wanted to order so it'd be shipped out that day. I really don't do any overclocking, as I've never had good luck. I remember when I tried to get my ram's timings to the advertised values (4-4-4-15 rather than 5-5-5-15) and I tried a 2.0v with those timings and it just ended up with my games crashing. Not wanting to have to constantly restart, I just put it back to normal; as even at 4-4-4-15, I noticed almost no difference.

OK I am officially struggling to get head around this mobo. I cant seem tp kee[ the multiplier at x7 (cpu-7 reports it as x6 despite bios setting) I flashed to v5h and cleared cmos but I am only running at 6x266.7=1600MHz so needless to say my upgrade is a failure. I will try reinstalling windows later to remove chance the Gigabyte hardware or old drivers may be keeping it throttled back. I also dont seem to get the whole multiplier ratio deal as it pertains to my cpu. I would love a little coaching here on the basics of ocing with the e6320 as I am not getting anywhere. Also, the phantom pci device installing itself is annoying. Followed proper security protocols and scans dont show threat so I messed something up along the way or I am missing a piece of the puzzle.

I hear that DDR2 RAM prices are going up again soon, so I might invest in some better quality DDR2 800 sticks.

I will update the bios as well, just to see if that helps.

Cheers

How do you tell what type of memory you are getting? I plan to buy two of these to get 4 GB RAM:

Corsair XMS2-6400 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 4-4-4-12 Xtreme 2x1024MB (tot. 2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz with Heatsink

Are those the ProMos 667 Mhz chips that can cause trouble?

Just bought a GA-P35-DS35 several days ago and have to return it.

The problems:

1. motherboard take about 5 seconds to spin up the CPU fan. CPU fan speed is about only half as normal.

2. does not recognize any floppy. Be it on-board or USB, just can't boot from floppy.

3. I tried to use Win98 CDROM to boot and can't do it either. Since after booting DOS from Win98 CDROM, it can't find any CDROM anymore!

Because all of above, I can't even update the BIOS and have to return it.

I don't know if it's my bad luck or what. Purchase 2 ASUS P35 motherboard, all DOA, and this is my 3rd try on P35 motherboard and it's DOA too!

Tried different PSUs, all above 500W (Antec) and tried Kingstons & Patriot DDR2 800 memories, and none of these 3 P35 works! I know the memories are good since they worked perfectly in my ASROCK 4CordDual-VSTA.

I don't know if I got RMAed motherboards which were sold as new. Since all these boxes are not sealed! But all of them do look like new. Yout thoughts?

Im having a nightmare with my DQ6. I set it up with an E6600 and had it overclocked at 3.2Ghz with OCZ 2x1GB PC8500 (the SLI stuff) running at its rated 1066Mhz at 5-5-5-15. All was perfect for several weeks until 1 morning it wouldnt boot. It kept powering up and down. Eventually it booted. This problem has got steadily worse. I used to be able to resolve it by clearing CMOS with jumper and rebooting. I could then immeditaely enter CMOS and reload my old overclocked settings and it would boot fine. Ive never had any issues with it once its booted. Vista (32) runs perfect. All benchmarks and diagnostic tests check out fine. Reverting to stock CPU speed or relaxing RAM speeds doesnt help either.

Now problem is so bad that it can take me over an hour to boot it from cold...I' not sure what the secret is...just trial and error....I usually unplug all the cards and stuff and plug it all back in...sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. I even replaced my 550W PSU with a 600W....waste of time and money...it didnt help. I've tried different RAM too.
Gigabyte gave usual blurb about removing board from case and booting with just 1 stick RAM and G/card. Nothing helps. They now suggest I RMA but I dont think my supplier will take it back so far down the line or that they will test and decide its OK and return it to me....it may still be something quirky with my setup but god knows what.

Tried loads of BIOS revisions...currently running the Beta F5L.
I now leave the machine on 24/7....its currently been on for about 2 weeks without any problems but I know if I turn it off the crap will start again. Very frustrating....I almost wish it had died totally...then I'd have no choice but to RMA...but fact it works fine as long as I dont turn off makes me reluctant to go through a drawn out RMA process while I have no PC. Grrrrr....

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.....seen other people on forums with similar issues but yet to see any real conclusion or solution. I think these rev 1.0 boards may be duff though. Or maybe ultra pickey on what RAM they like. The weird thing is that my system ran flawless for about 3 weeks before the rot set in.

Another thing I dont get is that my RAM is supposed to be rated at 2.3V so I tried upping the DDR2 voltage by +.45 (default is 1.8 right?) but Sandra still says Memory DC line is 1.8??? Is that the voltage the RAM is running at therefore? Or am I reading wrong figure...is there another reliable utilty to show the RAM voltage that the system is running at?

Thanks for any pearls!

Good Evening Mr. Cruiser,

I may have had a similar issue with the Gigabyte GA-N680SLI-DQ6 board as what you are describing. I finally found a "fix" for my problem, and posted it on the Thread that I started many months ago concerning that board. Here's the pertinent part of that posting:

Good Evening Everyone,
I believe that I have some "Good News" to share with you with regard to my continuing problems with bootup on the N680i board. I took some very good advice from our colleague Mr. Gary, and wiped out the CMOS settings, and then rebooted. Then I set the "Optimized Defaults" (which was apparently a mistake), and then shut down, rebooted, and set all the BIOS settings as per usual. No luck with that routine, since I still got the constant reboots, and the message:

"Building DMI pool .............................................Flash ROM Protected"

So I decided to take another look at what I had done, and wiped out the CMOS settings again, rebooted, and this time on bootup I utilized the "Fail-Safe Defaults," and then went directly into the BIOS flash utility (Q-Flash), via the F8 key. In the Q-Flash, I changed the setting for "retain DMI settings" to disable, and also loaded the default CMOS settings from within Q-Flash. I then exited Q-Flash (F10 key) and shut down. On reboot, I went into the Setup, and set all the BIOS values to their full performance settings (as before), EXCEPT that I changed the value for "Flash ROM Protection" from "Auto" to "Enable."

When I rebooted at 384 x 9 (E6850), with auto voltages, the machine booted right up, with no reboot. After Vista 64 loaded, I shut it down cold, and then started it up again. It started again, went through the POST, no hesitation, and went right into Vista again. This sure looks like the best solution I've seen so far, and this PC is running quite well at 3.45 GHz at auto voltages, and the memory set at 5-5-5-15-2T. If this holds, it will be a miracle.

I've been racking my brain on what might be causing the reboot problem, and I think it has something to do with some DMI values that were being retained in the CMOS, and because I had the "Flash ROM Protection" set to Auto instead of Enable, that allowed those settings to be written to the BIOS during bootup, thus messing up the boot process. Now that's only my humble diagnosis of this recurring plague, but it seems the most logical answer. Many thanks to Mr. Gary for his suggestion about clearing the CMOS, etc., since that got me thinking in the right direction about the other steps that I needed to take.

I hope the foregoing may assist some of the other Forum members (and others) who have had that same type of problem. Take care and have a nice evening. TheBeagle

I added to that posting with these further comments:
I shutdown and restarted my rig last evening about a dozen times, and each time it booted up without any of those nagging reboots. I haven't changed any OC settings, etc since it was stabilized, so I'm not positive about it being a complete cure. However, I NEVER previously had that number of starts, stops, and restarts without encountering that DMI message and reboot situation. I'm almost afraid to tinker with it (but I eventually will, of course) since I'm just enjoying the flawless bootup sequence at the present time.

After I wrote the posting last evening on this whole problem, it seems that wiping out the retained DMI code (whatever it may have been), by the method I employed, was what the board needed for a fresh start. Incidentally, after I accomplished the rebirth of the flawless bootup sequence, I encountered an interesting collateral situation. About an hour after I "fixed" the problem, an alert message appeared on my screen indicating that my copy (100% legit) of Vista 64 Ultimate required activation within 3 days. Since I had already activated my OS months ago, I was quite surprised by that message. The alert message indicated that Windows Vista 64 had sensed that there was a major change in the hardware base for the previous activation, and that the OS needed to be re-activated.

Since the ONLY change in anything related to the hardware base of my PC was the CMOS procedure and BIOS settings outlined above, I suspect that that procedure did, in fact, wipe out the CMOS setting, including some stored DMI settings, that were residing within the bowels of the motherboard. It was a reasonably easy task to re-activate the OS, but it required a toll-free telephone conversation with someone, who by her accent, was located on the other side of the world from the USA. The M$ activation representative was very nice, and gave me the 48 digit code to get things back in shape. It would seem that the re-activation requirement may be proof of the wiping out process that I described. I'll keep you posted on whether or not this "fix" sticks. But for right now, it sure has been a blessing!

Best regards to everyone. TheBeagle

Those comments and more can be found here: GA-N680SLI-DQ6 Thread Link I don't know from your description if this is the same problem, but it sure sounds like at least a first cousin of what I encountered. Hope it is of some help to you. Best regards. TheBeagle
