I have been playing with the PCMCIA card (WIN 2K) and it has been working just ...yadda yadda yadda...

Yeah, I've been running it on XP with their drivers (did you get the latest version from the website?) with the wireless zero config. turned off and it hardly ever disconnects randomly. The 128-bit encryption works fine also, providing you turn of zero config. I ususally get about 50% signal strength, and about 60-75% link quality, but that seems to be adequate to provide me a nice fast internet connection for my PC (I've lost a LITTLE speed, but I am still getting over 1Mbps according to broadbandreports.com). PC to PC file sharing seems to zip along okay as well (been using it a lot lately to share music between my wife's laptop and my PC using iTunes).

Also, my PC Club (the Bellevue, WA store) is a pretty good place to do business. They never call me about an item I've ordered online being in until they have the item set aside with my name on it. They were also good about returning that horrible MSI wireless adapter I bought to try out. Of course they are located over on "Tech Row" on 20th Street in Bellevue and have Harddrives NW, Computer Stop, PC Mobo, and Compusave all on the same block, so they have to give some pretty good service to keep customers in that kind of competitive environment. I've bought a lot of stuff from them, and they've always been good to me. The manager there even came down a bit on the A7N8X Deluxe I bought from them because Newegg was quite a bit cheaper than them (not a total price match, but it was a fair price considering it let me pick up the item that night and get my PC up and running instead of having to wait a few days for Newegg to deliver). If I've learned one thing working in retail, it is that the store manager makes a big difference in the quality of service you get. A bad manager at one store can do a lot to hurt a good chain, just as a good manager can redeem a bad chain in you town. That's why so many deals here are YMMV. So much depends on the individual store location's management it is hard to make blanket statements about a chain (good or bad) just based on what your location is like.

Another good word for the PCClub. I ordered this online and picked it up at the store, and the CSR I spoke to at the store made sure they had one set aside for me before giving me the green signal to come in.

He said "I'll check and call you back" the first time I called ... and he actually did call me back within 10 minutes ... now that's something rare you don't see everyday

How do I turn off wireless zero config?

AND the PCMCIA card is crashing my computer. I took it in and they replaced it but the new one is now crashing my computer. Frustrating! The whole thing just freezes so there is no troubleshooting that I can do. Any ideas?

This is a great deal, IMHO.

Mommy dearest happened to be visiting; so I picked up 2. Install was a breeze on Win2K Pro. Signal strength number hovers around 35%; but my ICS of my DSL access was flawless throughout the house.

PC Club has been great, too. This was my fourth purchase via the Web at PC Club. Product has always been available at the local store. The associates at the store are stereotypical "13-year-old in an adult's body" geeks with no social graces; but they were helpful enough without making me want to blow off my head or spray a can of Lysol.

Were you able to get this adapter to work on Win XP? I ahve the same problem getting it to work on XP. I haven't tried yet with other OSs. It appears the success rate is best on Win 2000 with this adapter.

Are you guys who bought earlier, started recieving the mail-in-rebates?

No prob for me on XP. Make sure you follow their instructions regarding disabling the MS wireless stuff that gets installed automatically when you first add the dongle - my pc did lockup or something (has been a while) when I first added the dongle.

Thanks for the response. I may have already done what they were saying, but will double check again. Meanwhile, could you tell me the Router/Access Point you are using. I have NetGear Router/AccessPoint. Just cheking, if the brand of the Router makes any difference, here.

FYI, I am usingthe XP "zeroconfig" capability and it's working fine too.

OK. I got it work on my XP as well, after initial problems unrelated to the USB adapter. The signal strength is very good.

When you go into your network adapters, right click on the adapter and open up the properties. Go to the "Wireless Networks" tab, and uncheck the box that says "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings." By doing this, you are putting the manufacturers drivers in full control of the card, which sometimes makes it work better. I know the D-link drivers for the Cardbus card are a LOT spiffier than the Windows configuration interface - it gives you a LOT more info about the network infrastructure, which is really useful for troubleshooting a PC that won't connect (espedcially if your network is locked down pretty well).

By the way, never trust the signal strenght indication that the drivers give you: manufacturers discovered that people were sauing "my card is better than yours" because they got 80% signal strength vs 50% so they started making their drivers report "inflated" numbers.
Either use some utility to calculate actual throughput, or at least see if the drivers will telll you how many packets were sent at 11Mbps (highest speed), if 100% packets go out at 11Mbps, you're OK regardless of what the driver reports for the signal strength.
