http://realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/republican_presidential_nomination-1452.html

Gingrich at 38%! This latest surge is looking a lot bigger than either the Perry or Cain bubbles, and Gingrich is peaking at a good time.

Yes, yes, I know. It's Rasmussen, and it's just one poll. If this is not a huge outlier, it changes the race (again). I think he'll hold up better than Perry or Cain, as people already know about him.

As a liberal, Romney scares me more than Gingrich because I think Romney is more electable, but at least no one can question if Gingrich is smart enough to hold office.

So the question is: will Gingrich take the nomination?

Edit: Well, he's certainly not lacking optimism over the new poll.

I think as horrible as Gingrich is, the odds are now in his favor - his history as Speaker and record of right-wing views and attacking Democrats will be enough for him.

It's hard to not to see him becoming (even more of) a major embarrassment to the party if nominated.

On the other hand though, the GOP has a record of giving it to the 'previous 2nd place', and that's Romney as much as he's disliked, and power interests probably view him as safer.

there was a NYT story recently about how old-fashioned face to face politicking is dead. Now it's all commercials and appearances on Fox News. That explains everything IMO. FOr chrissakes, the earliest frontrunner in this race was DOnald Trump

Clinton didn't exactly travel light in the baggage department either and he was elected. It's a handicap for a candidate but not a deal breaker. The election will depend a lot more on how the economy is doing in the next year and if total fatigue of Obama sets in by next November; those could overcome any amount of baggage Gingrich has.

You severely underestimate how much baggage Gingrich has.

And times have changed considerably since Clinton was first elected.

Wasn't Gingrich a pundit for the longest time? I'm surprised people haven't been pulling things (whether or not they are out of context) from what he's said online to make him look bad. I think that's a huge liability for a presidential candidate.

I was kinda thinking the same thing. Punditry in general involves what's often the greatest sin in politics, bluntly saying exactly what you think. Preaching to the choir tends to result in greater bravery than speaking to the country as a whole.

And I can't help but wondering if that's what we're seeing here. Gingrich might be pretty appealing to Republicans as a fire-spitting, liberal bashing political warrior.

this is a train wreck that keeps getting worse - Obama is as vulnerable as any incumbent in recent times, and this is the best the GOP can come up with? He's un-electable.

I think there is much to be said about that other thread, that this 2012 field is the weakest GOP POTUS field in recent GOP history.

As all candidates have a certain luster and conservative cred, but as soon as one GOP POTUS contender becomes a front runner, they are put under a microscope and are found to have far more warts and flaws than they have GOP virtues.

After running through almost everyone else in the 2012 GOP Potus field who already failed the microscope test, its now Newt's turn in the barrel. But if we want to talk about Newt's political baggage, he has more skeletons in his closet than a barrel of evil winged monkeys.

But still that the GOP question, after Newt fails the sniff test, the GOP has no one else left. Except maybe John Huntsman, who has no GOP conservative appeal.

Its the 2012 GOP dilemma. Mr., the GOP needs a man like Herbert Hoover again, when grl were grls and men were men.

Might be close enough to the primaries for him to self-destruct after them. The GOP candidates this go around are like bottle-rockets.

Until Gingrich decimates him in their first debate. I can't wait to watch him squirm.

As my father says, Newt is the kind of person dumb people think is smart. He has an authoritative, condescending tone that sounds impressive until you realize much of what he's saying is false and/or bought and paid for.

Gingrich sounded just as confident and authoritative when he slammed Paul Ryan's budget "right-wing social engineering" as he did when he was supporting it, literally the next day. Similarly, he sounded confident and clear when he was sitting alongside Nancy Pelosi, proselytizing about the evils of global warming, just as he does now when he says we can't know whether or not it's a real phenomenon. Same thing with the bailout, same thing with Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. If you wait long enough, he'll say whatever you want to hear, and say it with authority. It sounds good in this era of sound-bite politics, but really, there's no there there.

Except really winning a debate has to look like winning to people besides the folks who were going to vote for you anyways. The only people who think Newt is a debating God now are the people who would probably be in his camp if, during the debate, he accidentally set his podium on fire.

Newt and Mitt are both lightyears ahead of the post turtle, but Newt has to figure out how to overcome the baggage and the inevitable smear campaign that will come from the left wing media when / if he runs against the post turtle.

You can't blame President Obama for Gingrich being all over the map on his cardinal "conservative values." Ron Paul, not President Obama, has already raised this, accusing him of "serial hypocrisy." His unsuitability as a candidate goes far beyond his serial philandering. Remember when he flip-flopped on the Ryan budget in one day, just six months ago?

His major embarrassment will be in expanding government fascism the same way Bush did.

Thank you. Someone had to say it.
If my fellow so called "conservatives" nominate either one of this idiots, we will get a repeat of the last disastrous 10 years, most likely even worse.

While I believe Gingrich will kill Obama in the debates, I have to agree with the staunch liberals on here that Obama will still win. The media is just waiting to hammer Gingrich about his divorces and his ethics issues. And they will turn what was good legislation, Contract with America, against him.

You obviously have no idea what the word fascism means, else you would not be using it in such an incorrect manner.

fas·cism/ˈfaSHizəm/
Noun:
An authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.
(in general use) Extreme right-wing, authoritarian, or intolerant views or practice.

Nope I think he is spot on.
