Gingrich wanted public execution for possession of weed.

Gingrich wanted mass public executions for as little as 2 oz of weed. This is the sick fucks the republicans want.

Newt Gingrich has had a pretty rough couple of weeks, and things just got worse today when most of his top staff resigned. I hate to hit a man when he is down (actually in this case I don’t mind too much, Newt is as slimy a politician as his name suggests), but last night I was reading Illegal Drugs: A Complete Guide (don’t worry mom, it is for school), when I came across this on page IX:

Congressman Newt Gingrich, the Speaker of the House, proposed legislation that would impose the death penalty for people caught carrying as little as 2 ounces of marijuana. (1996′s HR 4170). He excused his own past marijuana use by explaining that pot smoking ‘was a sign that we were alive and in graduate school in that era.’”

Now that takes a set, to propose the death penalty for something that you did in the past.

But like any nanny state politician, he is doing it for the children:

“it is because you have made the personal decision that you are prepared to get rich by destroying our children. I have made the decision that I love our children enough that we will kill you if you do this.”

He goes on to propose mass public executions to make a statement that we are hard on crime:

“The first time we execute 27 or 30 or 35 people at one time, and they go around Colombia and France and Thailand and Mexico, and they say, ‘Hi, would you like to carry some drugs into the U.S.?’ the price of carrying drugs will have gone up dramatically.”

Newt further justified his change in opinion with this statement that is so incoherent it is difficult to believe he was sober at the time:

When I smoked pot it was illegal but not immoral. Now it is illegal and immoral the law didn’t change, only the morality. That is why you get to go to jail and I don’t.

Nana Nana Bo Bo, Stick Your Head In Doo Doo.

When it comes to medical marijuana, he has also had a significant change of position over the years. In 1982 then congressman Gingrich wrote a letter to the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association supporting medical marijuana stating in part:

This outdated federal prohibition is corrupting the intent of the state laws and depriving thousands of glaucoma and cancer patients of the medical care promised them by their state legislatures.

I'll accept it if we can have public execution for lying politicians.

Apparently Moveon.Org has sent out its marching orders against Newt.

Do you ever engage in substantive discussion, or just post this kind of snipe? This is literally the only kind of post I've ever seen you make. As I asked you in another thread, are you pleased that Gingrich is your party's front runner? Do you believe he's the best man for the job? Do you agree that public executions for marijuana are a wise idea?

I take it that, as usual, you are thread crapping and have no substantive response whatsoever to the issue raised. And with that, we should assume that you are actually incapable of any such response because the merit of the charge is essentially unassailable. Thank you for confirming that yet again.

Edit: I didn't notice DVC said essentially the same thing before I did.

When you have a President that believes in killing people because they are brown, I can't see how Newt can be any worse.

To be fair, it's actually for smuggling, not simple possession, and it's for the second offense. First offense is life without parole. Let's just get that out of the way.

Essentially you are the stereotype of the conservative who can't think and can't argue a coherent point. What an embarrassment you are to conservatives.

As I suggested in another thread, Gingrich has way too long of a history to not get burned by it, both as a pundit and as an official. I remember how he said he thought orphanages are a good idea. Although part of me kind of likes the idea, most Americans are not going to go for his brand of conservatism in a general election.

He appears more of an authoritarian than a conservative on this. A true conservative would not endorse laws regarding marijuana like this. Of course the meaning of conservatism has been bastardized by these politicians. What passes for conservatism today is a joke. A true conservative also wouldn't endorse any laws restricting what two or more consenting adults do (re: gay sex) in the privacy of their own home, feeling that the government shouldn't have any say in that anyway.

Thanks for clearing that up. I just knew in my heart Newt couldn't be as bad as everyone says.

Careful, you're gonna stir up a hornets nest injecting facts into this thread.

I am not familiar with this issue, or it came up a long time ago, but what is the truth? The title of the thread (possession = execution) or dealing/smuggling = execution for the second offense? Someone also said first offense = life but then if someone has life, why worry about a second offense? Is that if they get out on parole?

Does Newt's "executions for drug dealers" apply to anyone who sells marijuana or just to members of drug cartels that often violently brutalize the entire drug supply/demand chain?

The former is totally indefensible from a truly conservative point of view. The latter is probably something a vast majority of conservatives and liberals would agree to.

The former is simply selling a product for a market-derived price. The latter is selling a product for a price enforced by threat of violence.

Here are some of the facts of the law he wanted to pass.
--------------------------------

Summary:
9/25/1996--Introduced.
Drug Importer Death Penalty Act of 1996 - Amends the Controlled Substances Import and Export Act to direct the court to sentence a person convicted of bringing into the United States a proscribed quantity of a mixture or substance containing a controlled substance in an amount the Attorney General has determined is equal to 100 usual dosage amounts to life imprisonment without possibility of release (or, if the defendant has violated such provision on more than one occasion and if certain requirements under the Federal criminal code are met, to death). Makes conforming amendments to the code.

From the law itself:

‘‘(B) in an amount the Attorney General by
13 rule has determined is equal to 100 usual dosage
14 amounts of such mixture or substance;
15 to imprisonment for life without possibility of release. If
16 the defendant has violated this subsection on more than
17 one occasion and the requirements of chapter 228 of title
18 18, United States Code, are satisfied, the court shall sentence the defendant to death."
