If you took the time to read the news story, you might notice that the woman expressed a lack of respect throughout the entire proceeding. It didn't start when the judge said "bye-bye". He'd already admonished her once for not taking it seriously, but she chose to ignore his warning.

She earned it.

OK, well that might explain it a bit more. If the judge doubled her bail and then gave her 30 days b/c she said "Adios" and then flipped him the bird, that's a little excessive. The judge should be man enough not to let some arrogant brat get under his skin. However if he gave her repeated warnings and she still acted like that, then maybe this will help her learn.

that is an extremely depressing concept that is pretty factual, making it even worse. I can see simple rules of decorum (which were abused by both sides in this situation), but to say "Freedom of speech doesn't apply to court rooms".............now my whole weekend is ruined.

Here in Tennessee, criminal contempt is only punishable by up to 10 days in jail, anything longer and they have a right to a hearing. A lot of times, defendants will find themselves with multiple contempt charges, so the judge with sentence them consecutively, 10 days apiece. I say a guy have 180 violations once. As for her bond, the defense attorney will most likely be able to have it lowered. Bond should not be punitive in nature.

It's more to do with keeping order and having things flow smoothly than with repression.

If you've never been to a court proceeding, more specifically a plea or bond hearing, it's a VERY enlightening experience. Dozens, if not a couple of hundred people packed into a courtroom. A judge, a few administrative people and a couple of bailiffs. Go look at peopleofwalmart.com and that's the makeup of 90% of people there. Figure three dozen hearings, and 30 are like the girl in the video. And that's just the first afternoon hearing.

The judge and court can't be jacking around with a hundred people a day. I'm not saying a judge should be heavy handed and treat people rudely, but they do have to keep a proper decorum just to make it through the case load.

I saw the whole video before this thread was posted. The judge shouldn't have stooped the the level of a teenage junkie. I don't have any idea how anyone can excuse his behavior. Her behavior shouldn't be surprising.

Meanwhile, if she came from a wealthy family none of this would have happened. A lawyer would have handled everything for her and despite her youthful ignorance she would have skated.

I get a kick out of the number of people who think the judge exhibited poor behavior. I don't think they understand that, in the courtroom, the judge IS the law. The judge can do whatever he pleases because he has that authority.

Oh, if his actions are too off the wall, his decisions can be vacated or, he can even be censured. BUT, all of this takes time and, the person who pissed him off will STILL be cooling their heels even IF a judicial review reversed the judges decision...a month later.

I don't think the judge was out of line, but there are rules of conduct for judges too (in CA, a judge must act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary; is required to perform judicial duties without bias or prejudice, including engaging in speech or other conduct that would reasonably be perceived as bias or prejudice, etc.)
