I'm just intrigued that the second poster in the thread appears to have been deleted so comprehensively that there's nothing left of them, not even a user-name.

did AT allow anonymous posters back in the day? i thought maybe so, but i'm not sure if they got rid of it by 2005

i had a 4.0 all through school and college and would trash myself for weeks if i got a B on a test or assignment

therapy's like cheating though, i just do the old fashioned hating myself like god intended

Well was it all worth it in the end?

eh, debatable

i got free college from my HS 4.0 plus very high SAT/ACT scores, and free grad school from my undergrad 4.0

neither of the couple buddies i worked with most in my undergrad classes put in as much effort as me, but both were doing just as well as me after we all got jobs

one of them got hit by a drunk driver and died when he was 29

the other went full apocolypse prepper, put almost all of his money in bitcoin around 2012, sold out later and was worth 8 figures by his early 30s

i guess i'm doing middle of the pack, comparatively

I wish it were 2005 again.

It makes me hyperventilate realizing how much time has passed.

So today that girl that hyperventilated because of the fear of her parents reactions to a "C" on a test 17 years ago, is now in her mid 20s, and probably goes to therapy once a week.
But she can probably afford that therapy/has a job with insurance because her parents made her care about school .

So mental abuse of children is OK, as long as the abuse causes them to study?

Middle of the pack includes most people on earth if your benchmarks for success or failure are die in a freak accident or get rich in a freak accident.

Yeah, I was like that. Would have a major existential crisis if I got less than an A grade on anything.

Didn't really do me any good in the long run, not at all. Funny thing is it didn't come from my parents...at least it didn't in 'real time'...somehow I'd already 'internalised' that way of thinking before I got to my school 'career' and proceeded to do it to myself.

There is a pretty long scale from just teaching your kids school is important and mental abuse. It's also abuse to let your kid sit there and rot in from of a TV failing through school and getting fat.

I was definitely not mentally abused about school but I still got upset at some grades.

You have absolutely zero idea what to this girl's home life was. But yes, I think it's reasonable to push your kids to be good in school so they can have more fullfilling lives. Of course, there are limits to methods and how far.

Welcome to being Asian. You get a C? You're gonna get your ass beat when you get home. You'll be grounded, studying everyday until you get your A's back.

Nothing wrong with that, however to have such a reaction based on your fear of how your parents would react is child abuse.
Wreck dad's car because you were speeding or showing off, then is the time to worry about a parents' reaction. Getting a "C" on a single test... that's not a health environment.

Don't play that card, when you also don't have a fucking clue what that girl's home life was like. However, it is clear she feared her parents over just being 'average'.

But that was "you", not fear of people that are supposed to love and nurture you.

Gee... that sounds just like teachings of religion, stumble one time and spend eternity burning in hell.

Having education shoved up a child's ass is less likely to create adults who bitch about "Jews dominating the world" because of a conspiracy instead of culture and work towards entering the education pathway.

First this is at least a third hand story. Second, I'll admit neither of us have any idea what this girl's situation was. She might have been upset that she was going to have to keep going to tutoring. She might have been upset that she was getting a belt. Neither of us have a clue. The most anxious kid I know has the most supportive dad I know (but a POS mom, who couldn't care less about schooling).

I agree with you in general though, that kids, especially young kids are under way too much pressure to be perfect.

You are right, antisemitism is learned in the home, along with Islamophobia, misogyny, homophobia, bigotry, racism, and intolerance for anyone who is even slightly different.

Of course, understand of science and learning critical thinking skills are the first casualty.

It isn't always learned from home. It is pretty easy to build up in ignorant people who live in fear.

I have some racist cousins that absolutely did not have racist parents. But none of them are educated.
