I do appreciate folks who publicly identify as the bottom of the food chain though.

Now if only there were a way to keep her from driving again, voting, and/or otherwise putting the rest of us in danger of suffering the consequences of her monumental stupidity. That's what bothers me about the criminally-stupid - they end up harming the rest of us, either physically or financially.

EDIT: From the article cited by OP:
In 2013 alone, the CDC says, 3,154 people were killed in auto accidents involving a “distracted driver” — drivers engaging in activities like texting, web surfing and eating while driving. That’s eight people a day, 365 days a year.

I ride a bus home from work sometimes, and it's amazing the number of people I see operating motor vehicles on crowded highways while texting or otherwise using an electronic device. These people just don't give a damn about the safety of the rest of us.

i don't think you put it "online" but rather sent it to a few friends then it was gone after 10 seconds. like a "this message will self destruct" type of text message with a picture included.
Yep, it's to send a snapshot to your friends. Something to communicate easier a la "a picture is worth 1000 words" kind of thing. Not something to record history or lasting memories or upload to the Internet for the world to see or to be kept as evidence for your criminal charges.

I feel like the emphasis of this post is wrong.

The fact that she sped to 107mph for the purposes of taking a snapchat is the first emphasis. The fact that she took a snapchat while in the ambulance is...

I really wonder how this meeting at snapchat HQ took place. They okay'd a filter that shows speed while snapchatting? Who thought this would be a great idea that only encourages safe and responsible use? Somehow their legal team let this one through?

Read the posts from waggy (#24) and kranky (#20) above.

According to a report on KTLA News, Christal McGee took the ill-fated selfie while driving on a four-lane highway outside of Atlanta using Snapchat’s ‘Speed’ filter, which shows how fast you are going while taking the picture, a feature that for some reason exists.
Wow. I was pouring through someone else's friends list on Facebook the day before yesterday and I stopped on Christal McGee because I thought it might have been a different person I was looking ("Crystal"). I immediately recognized the name when I read that bolded even before seeing that this was in my area.

Small world.

Back in the day idiots like this were eaten by bears, lions, or sharks. Now they nearly kill themselves taking selfies.

Yes, but back then you were most likely the only casualty. Now, you can cause your own death and potentially others as well.

and the original concept was something you understood?
whats the point of putting a photo online for only 10 seconds?

Nudes or other potentially self incriminating pics. Duh!

And no, I only use the app to follow a site that occasionally posts (totally appropriate) vid blogs.

I'm against red light cameras. I'm against speed cameras. But, I'm sick and tired of watching cars weaving left and right, crossing into the oncoming lane, nearly hitting guard rails, and realizing that the driver is texting.

So, here's an idea: If a passenger in a vehicle (obvious if it's a passenger vs. the driver) takes a video of someone texting or using their cell phone while driving, the video also shows the car violating some rule - crossing onto the shoulder, or crossing lane lines, etc., gets the driver's face in the video, and the license plate of the vehicle - that should be allowable to issue a ticket. 2 tickets = loss of license. (NY currently sets it at 3.)

Sadly, this.

Attempted Murder. 20 Years.

Start handing out sentences to real criminals and people fall in line.

She'll get some sort of Vehicular Battery charge a year suspended and some fines. Get sued by the people who's lives she ruined and claim bankruptcy, which will allow her to start fresh.

Meanwhile Joe Bob is in prison doing 5 years for a bag of pot.

if there was a commercial for the war on drugs this would be the narration.

Is it possible to open a class-action against a company for creating a feature like this that actively encourages reckless endangerment of the public?

I don't see any alcohol companies providing a technology that tallies the number of beers you've had, while driving, and broadcasting that live to your retarded "social media" accounts. That would obviously result in a disastrous fine against these companies.

Why, then, is a company allowed to create the exact same feature regarding an activity that is in-arguably far, far, far more dangerous than drinking and driving?

Is it that these dillhole tech companies are equally stocked with braindead millenials that have no capacity for thought before sending out these idiotic features?

According to another article I found on this accident, this happened back in Sept. and she was never criminally-charged with anything!

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...-driver-snapchat-slow-crash-article-1.2619539

Some local police department or prosecutor really dropped the ball on this. Sounds like all sorts of laws were broken here.

Sometimes they don't charge you if you're young because wrecking your car & getting hurt is enough of a lesson in & of itself. Granted, if you take a selfie after & post it on the Internet for all to see, that's a slightly different story...

I might be OK with that if her incredible stupidity resulted only in her own injuries, but she both injured the passengers in her own car, who were begging her to slow the heck down and put down her $#%&* phone, and some poor guy whose only wrong was sharing the highway with an idiot. She also wrecked his car, too, and apparently he suffered brain damage. For her to face NO charges for this, and thus no risk of losing her license, which needs to happen, is a failure and a travesty.

We need more creative punishments. Throwing people in jail just clogs up the system and costs us money. Need fines, driving suspension, but most importantly they should take her phone away.
