I'm glad you bothered to watch the video and learn the story  Makes you look quite intelligent.

From the CNN story: she was a Yazidi. She was stoned by other Yazidis for falling in love with a Sunni Muslim.

Kthxbye.
And they were wrong. Murder is wrong, period. I don't care where you are, or what any religion says. BTW, I doubt anyone can show me that their religion over there says to kill a person for falling in love with someone from another religion.

I think you missed the point of jpeyton's post. He's merely pointing out people's biases when they hear a Middle Eastern country paired with the word stoning. Everyone likes to jump to conclusions on this board and it just makes discussion dishonest. I don't think he mentioned anything about murder not being wrong; just the assumption that the murderers were Muslims, which isn't the case.

These people still live like they did 2,000 years ago. Leave them alone and let them destroy each other, geez.

I like the American approach better. Commit a few hundred thousand troops, thousands of lives, and $1 trillion over a decade to spread freedum and fight terrar.

When will people realize that the problem is religion itself. That's right, any and all religion is evil.

You need to consider things from their point. That it how they handle that situation, maybe if an Iragi or someone from the middle east watched a video of divorce they would be outraged.

Just because its not the way you or "your people" handle it doesn't mean its wrong.

Murder is wrong. Period.

You know how a husband divorces his wife in Islam?

He kills her.

Yes, murder is wrong.

I thought they just had to say "Divorce" 3 times ? Don't know for sure, just remembering from that story where the guy accidentally divorced his wife talking in his sleep.

yeah. And according to law she had to have sex with another guy before remarrying her husband.

What?? According to Islamic Law, a woman that is divorced 3 times from her husband cannot go back to him without being married to another man (and no sex needed either). This exists to prevent men from throwing the D word around their wives like it means nothing, as a man has to think a million times before he says that word.

The imam or whatever in that case ruled that she had to spend the night with another man. I couldn't believe that, but I saw the same story over and over

that's why I edited my post and replaced 'muslim' with 'people'. ANY religion taken to extremes can be corrupted.

Good god. I just don't know how to respond to this video. As a young women myself, I'm just appalled. I can't believe that such a young girl - only 17 - had to endure such a fate. I'm 26 now, and I think back to when I was 17. Although I think I've always been at least bright enough to take care of myself, my perception of the world was only that of a kid - I didn't know half of what I do now, in terms of how the world works and how to survive. I know there is a huge cultural difference between our countries, but I just cannot come to grips with understanding how some men and some women are hardwired to watch and participate willingly in such brutality. I'll never know (obviously because I don't come from that region or culture), but also because I think maybe it's just who I am. I just can't even think of what that poor girl must have been thinking in her last minutes. What about her mother? And her father? I wonder whether they felt powerless to stop her fate within the community, or whether they thought that her punishment was fair?

I just wish I could do something.

I totally agree.

However when they try killing us we must drop the hammer, and dispense some indiscrimate justice!

some people live sheltered lives

well, you have to figure what the surprise is about. As for me, I want to specialise in human rights law (among other things), so yes, I've heard of honour killings and many other issues. Just seeing it so graphically is something that I've never witnessed (thankfully), until now.

The problem lies in what one considers murder. Judging from past threads, I'm sure that most of people here believe in capital punishment. You don't see that as murder. Here, we reserve capital punishment for what we consider to be the most heinous of crimes - namely premeditated murder. There, having relations with the wrong religion, apparently, warrants the utmost punishment.

I'm just saying its seems a bit hypocritical to say that their culture is so barbaric while so many other countries consider our capital punishment practices to be the same.

As for me, I find what they did morally despicable, but that's how I feel about all capital punishment.

What a bunch of sick fscks!

I am a bleeding heart liberal and try not to judge other cultures by Western standards, BUT there is NO justification for this archaic barbarism.

Also I found it disturbing, and quite revealing about the sick and twisted selective morality of the fundamentalists, that the men in this video felt the need to cover the girl's nakedness to preserve her, or their, modesty but didn't feel the need to step in and preserve her life. T-W-I-S-T-E-D.
This is an extreme version of the selective morality in American culture where nudity/sex is somehow more offensive than violence. This twisted viewpoint seems to be common to the 'strong' believers of all major religions.

Whackos.

PS: That America is the only Western nation to retain capital punishment is disgraceful IMHO. But, lets be honest, executing convicted murderers and what we saw on this video are two completely different levels of wrong.
