Oh, one other possibility is that they use a standard offer letter templates for multiple roles, including drivers or other roles that involve transportation. Her specific role may not require this at all, but it's something they collect in general to make it easier to generate offer letters, not having to figure out which text goes with which title. Quite common.

Seriously, she should not panic before talking to them.

She might want to double check with them if they just need her state ID/Driver's License number. In my state they're the same #, but it's usually called Driver's License #. All jobs require to have at least a government issues photo ID and a Social Security card.

1) Clarify with the new employer if it's okay to give your gf a few days to get the license
2) Get the license
3) Get the job

No need to panic, probably just an oversight on the employer's part not mentioning the details, so they should allow the time to get the license. It's easy, especially with automatic. No biggie.

By the way, thumb's up for your gf's work with autistic kids. She definite deserve better salary. Good luck.

Also - master's in education? Or master's in special education? If the latter, then I'm surprised she's having trouble finding a job. If the former, then what was her undergrad major?

REgular master's of ed. She's actually going back for the masters in special ed since that's where a lot of her experience is and she loves working with the kids.

That's what I'm thinking, she's going to clarify it today.

I'll update when I hear from her later today. Also, once she gets the 2nd master's she'll have the requisite degree for higher level positions, and about 5 years prior experience working with the population, she should make a decent haul.

Pics of GF?

As for the problem at hand:

GF needs license for job.
GF doesn't have license.
What to do?

Did you really need to consult the great minds of ATOT for this? If she wants the job, she needs to let the employer know she will get a license. Not sure what else you're looking for, this doesn't seem like a complicated situation.

Yeah, if I had a degree and only made 35k, i'd probably kill myself. OPs girlfriend should do the same.

A degree isn't always about maximizing income but giving yourself a chance at doing something you actually enjoy.

The company she was getting an offer from contracts out to other cities... and you both thought travel and driving wouldn't be required? I don't get it.

The contract she would be working on is in a major metropolitan area. Several of the schools don't even have parking lots.

This. She loves doing it, she's lives pretty frugally, and 35k to start while she finishes her 2nd masters and unlocks a higher pay for a similar job was going to be good enough for her.

does she have *any* teaching experience at all?

my wife is a special ed teacher, and with her masters in education administration she is making a whopping 32K. she didnt get her masters until after she had a job.

times are tough and schools really need alot to justify ponying out $$$ for the 2 masters they arent getting much use out of

- clarify with the person you spoke with first
- not sure why a company would ask for the ID# on the license specifically if it wasn't just for ID purposes.
- teachers here with a masters get 6 figures... kinda crazy, but so are our school taxes. Suburbs vs. cities.

Yeah she has some prior teaching experience, and what she's doing now technically counts, it's just not teaching a whole classroom..

32K.....ouch. It's hard here to get teaching jobs as well....they generally only hire people for classrooms that have several years of prior classroom experience. So the general m.o. is to teach in another part of the state for several years and then come here.

You need one to work, its that simple, i have used it in well over 70% of the jobs i have ever had and would not have got alot of them if i idnt have a DL.

Bullshit, you can get a state ID card, works the same.

Not if you actually need to drive, unless you are reccomending driving without a DL?

A employee with a DL is more valuble to the company than one without, say a parts driver or delivery driver calls in sick, if you have a DL you can cover for him. Your boss really needs somehting picked up ASAP and cant wait for courier, if you have a DL you can go get it, if not you are screwed. there are plenty of situations where having a DL can come in very handy.

If you are an employer you are going to give more priority to hiring people with DL's if your company has departments that require driving, even if the posistion you are being hired for is not a depertment that needs a DL you will still give priority to DL holding candidates because of the flexability it will offer.

I have been a warehouse manager in the past and we rarely did our own deliveries but did have a company van to use in the few instances when we needed it(maybe 2-3 times a month) and 90% of the time i would drive it myself just to get out of the place for a while. But i still only hired employees with a DL just so i had the option of sending them for supplies or deliveries if i had to. That and people who go out and get DL's tend to be more responsable that people that do not IMO.

This is why I prefer to do everything over email when asking for something important such as job requirements. At least you'd have recourse in court by getting it in writing.

Now the best thing to do is to clarify. If they still insist on the license part and she absolutely cannot get a car/license, then get a lawyer. However, first I would email that lady back and get it in writing that no license is required. It may just be a simple misunderstanding.

yeah its not optimal. atleast at the end of the year she should be tenured. but its not like we live in chicago(of course if we did she would be pulling 10-20k more)
