In addition to chemistry, I've been covering a lot of off-topic science with these kids as well. We've done space, technology in general, and mythbusters has been their "free-day" videos for this year.

The Griffith Observatory would have been great, but they are booked for the rest of this school year.
There's always the California Science center, but it's just so ... default. I feel like everybody starting in 5th grade goes there.

I figure there are a lot of high school kids here too. Maybe you can offer up a suggestion of places you have gone.

Get them a tour of a college. See if you can get them in to see something cool.

Hell... write the Mythbusters... They are probably out of Cali.

Take them to a science museum and possibly watch an IMAX flick on some science related sh!t.

I loved it when my school took us there. It was like a mini-amusement park for nerds.

Waste water treatment plant is interesting but that's more microbio than chemistry.

I'm sure there's a factory somewhere you can visit.

Ask some of the big

chemical companies or oil refineries

if they'll host a field trip tour.

Or, like everman said, UCLA.

lol
that's what i was thinking

In all seriousness, though. I agree with the college/industrial lab tour.

Depending on size of your class, you can try to get a campus lab to let you hang out for half a day, see how things are done.

Probably easier for an industrial/gov't lab. They might even have organized tours prepared for that sort of thing.

EDIT: whoops--genetics /= Chemistry. nvm

Mythbusters is in San Fran, not LA. Probably a trip to a University chem lab would be the best.

I just called JPL and it looks like they're booked 'till August. But the tour organizer still has to call me back.

Im in 10th grade chemistry also. Personally i dont know, but college field trips get boring and dont go to the Discovery Science Museum (the one with the big black cube) since most people have been there like 3 times since the 5th grade.

When I was in 10th grade chemistry, I took a tour of the the state public health lab. I got to see the different biohazard rooms, and they talked about environmental contamination and stuff. Of course, this was in Alaska, so it was not incredibly busy. It might be harder to get into one in California.
