Since my old rig crapped out last night I am looking to put together a decent gaming rig for under $1,500. I would like to stay closer to a grand but I also want this to last a little while. Here is what I have put together so far at NewEgg:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard
Item #:N82E16813128059

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Memory
Item #:N82E16820231098

EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512-P3-N801-AR Video Card
Item #:N82E16814130318

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Item #:N82E16822148262

Rosewill RP500-2 500W Power Supply
Item #:N82E16817182016

Acer AL2016WBbd Black 20" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
Item #:N82E16824009108

Pioneer 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model DVR-115DBK
Item #:N82E16827129018

Antec Nine Hundred Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window
Item #:N82E16811129021

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor
Item #: N82E16819115017

I am not overclocking I want STABLE. I don't want issues, I don't want compatibility problems. I really don't have time to do anymore than build it and deal with any dead hardware.

Let me know what you think.

some quick thoughts

get a SATA burner
$28 - Samsung SH-S203B

you need either a HSF or the retail version of the quad

if your main purpose is gaming, a lot of people will give you grief for not choosing the E8400 unless you have some other use that justifies the quad, especially if you're not overclocking the quad

what OS?

there will also be some suggestions to go to 4GB

the Abit IP35-E is $30 cheaper

if you're going to get that harddrive, spend $5 more to get the ST3250410AS, it's the next-gen 7200.11 disguised as a 7200.10 so it's quieter, more reliable, faster and all that jazz

the RP500-2 got the thumbs up from jonny, although you do have to be careful about Rosewill, they do have some real stinkers

in reality you could get the Antec Earthwatts EA380 and save $10, it's a reasonably quality unit and won't have any trouble with your rig

Just the fact that a e8400 > q6600 for gaming. And why Ultimate ? If home premium is cheaper, just get home premium, because well, ultimate has stuff I've never used, so why bother ? Unless you know what kind of stuff Ultimate has to offer, you simply don't need them Last but not least, I think MS is going to lower retail prices of Vista, not sure if, and how this will affect OEM prices though ? But it suck to buy something for 150$ now, to see it sell for 125$ tomorrow ...

If you are looking bang for buck consider more than just newegg.

I'd consider the FSP blue storm II. It is 80 bucks and they are an actual manufacturer of PSU's not just a re-badger.
They have it at newegg

The psu can be had much cheaper if you have a microcenter nearby. I'd say visit and try to get an E8400 but if not then get the Q6600 for a better price than newegg.

No reason you can't stay closer tot he 1K mark if you are willing to shop around a bit.
