What was your reason for changing to Win2000 or XP. Were you satisfied after the change?

Thanks

1) nothing better to do
2) desire for added stability
3) it was time to do a clean up after 1.5 yrs w/o reformatting.

overall satisified so far...consider that win98 is over 4 years old as an OS...

it's all about stability and efficiency...

win2k is more stable and faster than 98...which in my books makes it a much better choice...

Wanted a half-decent OS to play games on, Win98 does games but it's a far cry from a real OS.

For my "work" OS I upgraded to Linux =)

I still consider the 9x OSes to be "real" operating systems, but then, I remember Windows 3.1...

My reasons for changing are less important (IMO) than the reasons I find it hard to go back...

(1) Video capture on NTFS

I don't have to worry about file size limits due to the file system.

(2) Fast user switching (on XP)

Allows you to have a "work" desktop and a "play" desktop without getting the two confused.

(3) Smoother Multitasking.

at least it seems smoother to me

Plus my video card (ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV) was not as well supported under 98SE early on,
and the choice between Windows ME and Windows 2000/XP was pretty easy.

menus and toolbars 'fade' in and out in 2k

... on a more serious note, it was stability, efficiency, and overall a better os.

I switched to 2K because it's what we were using in my Net+ and A+ classes.
It is significantly more stable. I tend to leave systems running for days without a re-boot.
When running 98FE I could let it go for about 3 days before it choked.
Now running a Win2K/Gentoo Linux dual boot the only time the system comes down is when I switch to the other OS or shutdown for weather.

MUCH better ram utilization, much better stability, after SP1, 2K was a decent gaming platform and XP is a decent gaming platform if you know what you're doing............I kept 98 for gaming though until a while back when I just got a wild hair and found out all my games ran on XP and most ran better so why mess with it...........

Stability for me... my winME kept freezing if i left the computer on overnight (which happens a lot, for downloading etc...). This doesn't happen anymore with 2k Pro.
Ideally you want to dual boot: win2k/xp for games, Linux for everything else

which saying do you prefer? change is good or change is bad? which saying is better? it's a matter of preference.
Many have switched to win2k/xp and many stayed with win9x(mostly win98se) as well, based on their situation. Gamers that just use their computer mostly for games would probably go with win98se while a person who works/plays would rather have win2k/xp for balance.

I've used dos 6.22 up to xp, but have stayed with win98se because I haven't had a bad experience with it, and because certain old games I play run better on 98se. I have made 2 partitions and had both 98se and xp running fine but I didin't truly need 2 oses that's why I went back to 98se because it was better suited for my situation.

now let me ask you a few questions?
which is better... black or white? bigger or smaller? the new macho dan or the cool original dan of del taco?

You can't even argue Win98's benefits over NT because there are none. If this market was driven on technological points, which it should be, Win9X would never have been released because MS would have been laughed at. Sure it's faster in some situtations, but that doesn't mean it's better. Strapping a rocket to a skateboard is fast, but that doesn't mean it's smart.

Win9X is an abysmal attempt at a computer operating system and should left behind and long forgotten.

I switched to Win2k from Win98 well over a year ago for one simple reason. When OC'ing my Tbird 1GHz above 1.33GHz, my USB (read: mouse) would crap out in Win98, but not in Win2k. I've never looked back.

Well I switched because Im a nerd, and truthfully, Win9x just locks up sometimes over dumb things....I dont experience this with XP...and also games, I kept a partition for ME now (usually 98 SE) for games, but really XP runs games fine, so i may get rid of it....I had Win2k for a few weeks installed on my system and everything worked for games except NBA Live 2001, so its up to you

I went with XP on my new PC, (still have 98 on the old one) the main reason was it handles memory a lot better and is better at multi-tasking and that Microsoft is more or less stopping support for 98.

Real memory support. Windows 9x won't even boot on our machines here with 2048 and 4096 MB. It complains that there isn't enough memory! :Q

Cheers!

Well, because I actually wanted to OWN (not to be confused with 0wn3d) the os on my machine, so I had my buddy at MS pick me up a copy of XP Pro...

but mostly for the stability, and because I had an extra couple hundred mhz on my athlon left over after using 2k, so I figgured, what the hell, I'll let xp have em.

1) got tired of hanging on shutdown in win98se
2) got tired of memory being used up with no apps running
3) got tired of sluggish performance

just upgraded from win98se to win2k in May. i will never go back. the win2k/xp kernal is so much faster/stable.

i didn't go for XP yet b/c i wanted to wait for the inevitable bugs/security flaws to be fixed. i hear XP's SP1 is coming out in August so it may be worthwhile now.

forgot to mention #4) near 0% cpu usage when idle in win2k when, in win98se, cpu usage would stay at 100% after being on for a few hours....
