Coworker had one a few years back. I can still hear the moans from the bathroom. Legit horrifying, he sounded like a man on his deathbed

first one is always the worst. I pass salivary stones and they can get so big they stuck. Ive had 3 emergency surguries because them babies got too big. I posted a picture of one a few years ago and someone said they threw up looking at it

Drink shitloads of water man. last year I started the ultrasound therapy to break them up before passing but the gd insurance gives me grief about it. Ive passed hundreds of stones lost count.

Did they say what caused them? My vegan friend had some huge ones that required surgery. iirc it was too many nuts & too many greens (something about oxalates I think).

Ouch, sounds painful. Is this something that everyone eventually goes through? I sure hear about it often. I'm not looking forward to the day that it's my turn.

It is not something "everybody" goes through - most of the people I know have never had them. But it's more commonly associated with other health problems (bad diet, overuse of calcium-based antacids due to chronic heartburn, etc.)

160 pound paleo-vegans who run marathons and drink a gallon of water a day can still get kidney stones, but it's a lot less likely.

This is my nightmare. I've heard some women say it's more painful than giving birth. D:

Hope it passes for you soon!

I also hope I never have to go there. My sister has been in the hospital twice for them.

I've had 12.

They get easier.

Just like having your fingers chopped off probably gets easier.

I've had about that many too. Maybe more.

I just passed one the other day. (First one in 10 years)

Most have been easy to pass. 3 have sent me to the ER with pain at "11", but a couple passed without me knowing they were there until I felt it come out.

I wouldn't say they get easier, I think they just get more familiar.

OP, have you been drinking a lot of green smoothies over the past year? My girlfriend was drinking a green smoothie every morning for over a year, and recently had to go to the hospital because of kidney stones. Her doctor told her that he's had a fair share of green smoothie addicts who've developed painful kidney stones from the oxalates in the greens (kale, spinach). Too much of a good thing apparently.

A 2mm stone? That's a small one. I think I have passed a 7mm stone once.
But seriously, the size of the stone doesn't seem to correlate with the amount of pain in my (horrible) experience.
To avoid stones I drink tons of water, I drink a glass just before bed. Lemonade and beer are correlated with less stones. Do not drink Coke, it is one of the worst things you can consume. Lemon-lime soda with citrate is probably ok.
Avoid chocolate, any kind of nuts, spinach, kale, most green things.
Reduce protein and salt intake.
It is supposed to be a young man's disease, but I'm now in my mid 50's and still get them.
Drink more water.

FWIW - I had 2 kidney stones back in the early '80s.
An older gent told me to not drink so much water as that is what caused them, "switch to beer or wine".

Sure that's what I'll do

But it did get me to thinking and I did a lot of research.
Kidney stones are essentially calcium carbonate, other calcium compounds and some minerals.
The "hardness" of drinking water is essentially determined by how much calcium carbonate is in it.
The incidence of kidney stones is very much higher where drinking water is classified as "hard" and very much less where water drinking water is "normal" or "soft".
There are no coincidences.

Since my water in my area was "hard" I installed a water softener back then and have not had a kidney stone since and have not changed anything diet-wise.
I also told friends and neighbors (12) who had kidney stones about this and those that installed a water softener (9) have not had a reoccurrence
of stones.
Of the 3 that didn't, 2 of them have had more stones.

I know it sounds like folklore, but back in the early '80s it wasn't easy to do the research.
Today, with the 'net, anyone can very easily research for themselves as to what kidney stones are made of and verify that "hard" water areas have a much higher incidence of stones.
Then decide for yourself.
Just something to think about

Well I hope I never get one. You got me scared.
The way you all describe the pain I think I'd prefer another heart attack over a kidney stone.

Mine came after an extended period of eating chocolate. The Co I worked for at the time had given an older woman a job writing material movements through the warehouse, she had put caps on bottles for 20 years. I was slow and patient with her and helper her a lot, she brought in bag after bag of the Hershey little square chocolates, I would snack on them every day for months then one AM the pain started and gradually got so bad I called for an ambulance. The ambulance got me to the hospital quick but unfortunately for me two heart attacks and a car-wreck had happened that morning so I sat for 2 of the longest hours of my life waiting for a Dr. Finally I puked in a trash can and then started grabbing the bed and slamming it down on the floor, at that point the DR finally came and he asked to see my urine sample, it was stained with blood so he knew what was happening and gave me a huge shot of Demerol. X-rays revealed it had almost made it's way to the bladder so I was given a strainer and a pain script and got to go home. He also told me I was "lucky" in that any bigger they would have used "the basket" to go and retrieve it. My dick inverted back into my crotch when I heard about how "the basket" works!. 11 years later and no more stones, one of the worst parts is not knowing WTF was going on, if I get another at least I know I won't die from it.

Adavan, Torodal, and whatever else later....I'm all good.

Now I'm working on getting this baby delivered.

my method is beer, water, Toridol, Percaset and flowmax.

We'll see how it all works out.

Thanks for listening.

I'm assuming the stone is currently in the ureter. Just be prepared as the pain could potentially worsen upon the stone attemping entrance to the bladder. A potassium chloride and vitamin C fortified drink on an empty stomach does wonders to erode kidney stones. The RDA of potassium is almost 5g and there's likely no upper limit to vitamin C. Good luck.

There any way to prevent the darn things?

Yes, there is treatment. Anyone who has them multiple times should see a Nephrologist. I take two pills a day, haven't had a stone in over twenty years.

I'm glad I had a good doctor 20 years ago, most people aren't even aware their condition is easily treatable.

To avoid stones I drink tons of water, I drink a glass just before bed. Lemonade and beer are correlated with less stones. Do not drink Coke, it is one of the worst things you can consume. Lemon-lime soda with citrate is probably ok.

Drink more water.

Thank you I'm sure that will help some people avoid some major pain.
