The clip that holds the HS on the cpu is made of spring steel, in that it acts like a spring and keeps its shape (for the most part). It has a certain amount of tension (spring) which is the cause of the force which is cracking dies. This can be reduced by bending this spring down a little. As it is spring steel, it won't bend much, but if you bend it down (against the angle you will find in the middle of the HS), you should relieve enough tension to safely put this thing on.

I really don't know how you guys crack your core with the fop..

maybe just bad luck?

I've taken mine off 5 times now, without any problems.
that coming from a guy whose never used socket a heatsinks before too..

What I did was take a little tiny flathead screwdriver, wrapped the tip with electrical tape so it wouldnt scrap my motherboard if I slipped, then pushed near the very edge of the clip (not the part that attaches to the motherboard, that breaks off.. word of warning.) and it does take quite abit of force..

Maybe I have a super athlon. ;/

Good luck to you getting it replaced. it is YOUR fault althought for cracking it, yes bad design of the chip, and heatsinks led to it, but never-the-less I don't think they would replace it.

*Just jinx'ed himself to cracking his core..*

Also, I'm led to believe that core cracking comes from it going in on a tilt.

Maybe yours wasnt even as you should of had it.

I dunno..

Best of luck to you.

reviving an old thread.. I am paranoid about my FOP installation adn after reading this thread I am getting the copper shims. Any other advise for a (scared) newbie? By putting the screwdriver between the fans blades, do you mean inserting it there nad then catching the clip thru it? Should I pay $20 and let teh store where I got the CPU put it on and watch the first time?

Also, now this is really stupid, but the fan has 2 wires - one 4 hole female type adn 1 4 male type. ? Where do these attach to?

Actually copper shims are garbage. My solution is to get a piece of rubber and cut it to shape (the one I used withstands a lot of heat and does not melt easily - or a tough piece of cardboard could work). Anyway like chexi said remove the fan and flex the clip a bit to soften it up and make it a little less taut. I have removed and reinstalled the FOP38 at least 4 times without a problem and I have to do it one more time since I am selling the A7V for a A7V133. No problemo.
BTW if u think the FOP38/32 is hard try the chrome orb - that one made me dance in pain.

Personally I didn't think it was that bad... I always try to pre install a heatsink on the bare socket first to judge how hard its going to be with the processor installed. then if it seems excessive I pre bend the clip a bit.. you want hard? try installing a stock intel fan on a celeron chip with limited space to work in without bending the clip first.

that was pretty sh*tty of them to laugh at you like that, however you told the truth, sadly companies rarely hand out rewards to honest people.

Hey I feel for you. I've had mine on and off 4 or 5 times and I worry every time, maybe thats the charm. You'd think they'd start using coolers with either bolts, since a few mobos have boltholes, or a lever lock system. The hard part, at least on a KT7, is to catch the first clip without having the HSF catywampus over the core.

Maybe we could engineer a lever lock system (probably a cam would be better), and sell it for a fortune! Or AMD might buy the idea and bury it in order to sell more chips...

I second that. That way I can get the screwdriver down on the clip to apply necessary 20 tons(=1.21 jigawatts) of force required to seat the clip.

I never need to remove the FOP32's fan! Men.... sheesh...

Stingygrrl, just clip the one end of the HS down onto the mobo, center the thing on the cpu with your palm (using your palm to then hold the unit in place), slide the medium-sized flat-head screwdriver down through the fan blades and then through the HS slits nearest to where the final clip is (you should be able to see the clip bar through the top) and push down on the bar ONLY (and it doesn't have to be that hard - that's why you guys keep crackin' the damn cores... ). Finally, when the clip is parallel with the tab, flip it onto the tab.

I know, we men are basically just like a dumb gorilla. Give us a banana and we will find a way to squish it. (Or a core on a processor)
Ooooh Ooooooooooh Ohhhhhhh Ahhhhhhh.
