Global WIN FOP 32-1 broke my brand new TBIRD 750 Socket A

Is there anything I can do about this? I just ordered a brand new Tbird 750 Socket A from over at upgradeplanet.com and got a Global WIN FOP 32 -1 cooler to go with it. I noticed the first time that the clip was very tight when attaching it to the CPU. The 3rd time I tried to attach it after reviewing some markings, and around the 10th try of applying so much pressure to it in order for the clip to come down to the level of the ZIF socket, there was a quick loud grind, the heatsink popped off and the clip popped off. I examined the CPU to find that part of the core had been smashed and grinded down into a dust. Is there anything I can, possibly complain to GLOBAL WIN or get an RMA or something? I cannot believe how much pressure was required in placing the heatsink on. Anybody have any suggestions?

I know the felling man. I chipped the corners off my core and turned one side into dust. I finally got it on and it is running great. Did you ever get it on and try to boot?

OUCH!! That had to hurt. I thought I would never get my Alpha Pal6035 on. I really had to apply the pressure to get it to latch. Seems like they would have a better method of securing the heatsink to the motherboard.

Seems more than a few people have had luck RMA'ing for replacement the 32-1 is AMD approved so.......Hey it's more than worth a shot. I've had mine on and off way too much and I sweat the final 1/8th" everytime.

Well I learned a good trick from BunkerMentality.
Mix epoxy putty and place on the four corners of the chip. Pres down frimly and evenly onto glass. then remove and let dry. YOu have four rock hard pads now.

I have an Alpha6035pal, and after one feeble attempt at trying to put it on my Duron, there was NO way I was going to try anymore without protection. I really think the soft pads that AMD puts on is a pathetic joke. Why not just manufacture the chip witrh raised ceramic "pads"?

How do you all get theheatsink on without moving it all over the place? Even though I can get my alpha on now, its impossible to do without some heatsink movement. I can't stnad it because I know the arctic silver is getting suished all over the place and ruining the conductive potential..

I just did it after swapping a Blue Orb for a FOP38. A couple of swear words and thermal grease mess and it went on. I angled the heatsink with the back of the clip going on first, then pressed down on the heatsink, and helped push down with a flat screwdriver. A huge pain in the ass compared to Slot 1 P3's, but it worked.

My temps are about 5-6C lower than with the orb, but that won't make a sh*t of difference when my wife comes home and sees the dog ripped a hole in the couch.

Anyone want a hyper Italian Geryhound that answers to the name of Winston? I will trade for a 1GHZ T'bird.

I forgot to mention that after trying to clean up the surface of the cpu, I forgot to redo the bridges, duh!

i think it would be too hard to make the ceramic pads the exact height...if it's raised too little you still risk cracking the core, if it's raised too much you risk proper heat transfer

Pre-bend the clip, pre-bend the clip, pre-bend the clip. I can't say it enough. I thought I was gonna kill my Duron trying to put on my FOP-38. Artic silver all over the place, etc. Mobo turned out bad and had to get another. In all I had to put that darn thing on about 4 times. Before the 4th time, I took a pliers and pre-bent the clip down just a little tiny bit. I couldn't even tell if I actually bent it or not. But the last time I put that thing on it went on with a fraction of the force. I'm getting great temp's, so I know the contact is still good. Oh... did I mention to pre-bend the clip?

I found it really easy to install the FOP32-1. All I did was put a torx driver between the fan blades to push down the clip so it wont slip off and hit the mobo. This also puts the pressure on the fat part of the clip so its really easy. It takes me about 10 seconds to remove/install it. Most of the force I use is just put on the clip, so the core doesnt see an excessive amount of pressure.

Maybe I think its so easy, because I installed a Super orb first, now THAT was hard!

I've done the exact same thing that MUSTANG347 has done with my FOP32-1. Slide back end clip into its mobo tab, center HS unit over core, slide medium flat-head screwdriver down between fan blades near front end clip, hold unit steady and lightly push down on the screwdriver at a place on the bar nearest to where the front clip is until the clip is parallel to its mobo tab, slip clip onto its tab with a finger and release. Takes like 5-10 seconds for the entire operation...

Here's the response I got from the company upgradeplanet.com when I notified them of what happened.

"Unfortunately the warranty does not cover items that you break. I enjoyed
the story thoroughly, and had half the office looking at me as I wasabout
to fall out of my chair laughing, but I don't think I can do anythingfor
you except sell you another CPU.

Call their Sales and Customer Support: 703.730.9662 or 1.800.964.5007, and ask to speak to a supervisor. Tell them the response support gave you. It's pretty sh#tty that they're making fun of you when you just ruined your new cpu. And to email you and *tell* you they're laughing at you is even worse.

ddiccico,

I will snap a shot of him. I was told my someone after getting him that they were the first "lap" dogs. He just waits around until he can sit next to you, and has to be touching you, kinda like a new girlfriend. A pain in the ass, but too short to jump the fence.

I chiped the core of my Duron when putting the FOP 32-1 on. I hope it works!!!
I think I may invest in a Copper shim....

The FOP 32-1 is ssooo hard to put on. The edge of the clip where you push down is way too small. I cut my thumb trying to put it on.
I think I'll try the screwdriver between the fan blades next time...
