GM ready to repay govt loan, sees chance of profit

DETROIT – General Motors Co., steadily returning to health after its near-collapse in 2009, said Wednesday it plans to pay off its government loans by June — five years ahead of schedule — and could report a profit as early as this year.

GM said it lost $3.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009 on revenues of $32.3 billion. But things are on the upswing. Sales and production have increased and GM has gained U.S. market share since the start of the year. The automaker will try to maintain that momentum while facing a stiff challenge from a revitalized Ford Motor Co.

For the period from July 10, when GM emerged from bankruptcy protection after shedding billions in debt, through Dec. 31, GM lost $4.3 billion on revenues of $57.5 billion. But much of that loss was for one-time items, including a $2.6 billion payment to the United Auto Workers union for retiree health care. The company also reported several indicators of improving health: It took in $1 billion more than it spent in the period and began this year with $36 billion in cash and $60 billion in debt. At the start of 2009, it had $14 billion in cash and $104 billion in debt.

"General Motors should never again be in the financial position it found itself in last year," GM Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell said during a conference call with analysts and media.

I wonder if they sent Toyota a thank you note?

Most of the loan was in the form of equity. The government won't get that back until it can sell of shares of GM for the price it paid. This 'repayment' mentioned in the article only refers to the federal government's 6 billion(?) cash investment, IIRC.

Best quote of the article. For the hilarity factor.

GM should be forced to pay for everyones healthcare.

Yes, let's try to recoup the government's money by insuring GM's stock goes to zero.

One of the big problems with GM is that it's already paying way more for healthcare than they should be to stay competitive.

they are only paying 6.7 billion of the loan. The rest the government will get when the company goes public and the government sells all their shares in stock.

But...you lost 3.4 billion in the last quarter last year...and you're somehow fine and dandy? I wonder what they are smoking...

So where's the VOLT? weren't they saying give us money to hold us over until the Volt comes and we will turn things around? Its been months and still no Volt.

Bonuses ensure quality executives, or they're supposed to; I'm not going to argue that is what has happened as of late in the case of GM. But (possibly) more importantly, bonuses are paid out to just a few people and, in the grand scheme of things, don't affect the bottom line all that much. On the other hand health care is an additional cost for almost every worker they have, and it adds up VERY quickly.

You're asking for 20 billion every couple of months and you still havent come up with one? WTF?

I liked how they kept coming back and begging for more money by saying oh we got it, its just right around the corner, see here's a video of us driving it! oh just give us 20 billion more! 3 months later...oh yeah we're coming out soon, just give us another 20 billion, while they fly in on their expensive corporate jets LOL
And then another 3 months later when they drive up in their hybrids, billions more please!

It doesn't matter. In my opinion the Volt is probably screwed before it hits market. It isn't purely electric which will be a plus to some but if the latest price estimates I saw are correct then it's a dead car before the first trial leaves the plant.

Well, given that they've been stomping them down since the late 50's, they've got several decades of unfucking shit up to do, THEN actually make one that works.

So are you suggesting that the 20bil should have been used for a time machine? Development can only go so fast, the gov could have given them a trillion but that doesn't mean they'd have a volt ready the next day.

There will be plenty of tree huggers with too much money that will love to pay for something that proclaims that they care more about the environment than everyone else. Not only is it the next big showy piece of eco-tech, it's also made in the US. The rich tree huggers can act like they care about supporting the US economy too.

I predict there are enough people out there that fit that sort of mindset that GM will sell all they can make for easily for quite some time.

Wait, I am confused. Are they paying back the government loan or are they buying back all the government owned shares at the rate the government paid them? There is a distinction here. If they're only paying back the loan, GM is still operating under the taxpayer dime.
