Gmail integrates IMAP

Gmail gets IMAP.

My question is this, what is the difference between using POP vs IMAP with Gmail, if with POP you are still retaining all your messages on Gmail's server in order to check it from any computer anywhere?

What are the advantages/disadvantages to either/or?

I did a bit of reading, and it seems as if that's the main difference between the two protocols, but with Gmail keeping messages on the server, than is that point moot?

Well, the implementation of flags on messages is a lot more primitive on POP3. IMAP4 would probably still be better if you wanted to access that mailbox from multiple computers, but I can't think of much past the message flags that's advantageous in concrete terms.

It's also extremely faster compared to POP ... that's one reason for them to start using it.

I just reconfigure my email from POP to IMAP. I did so, so that I can more easily keep my work desktop/laptop/homePC synchronized, including sent messages, folder organization, and filters.

One thing I've not really dealt with yet, is whether or not, and how to download my mail to avoid loss over time (there are occasions when I need to find emails from over 1 year ago.)

Another little tidbit, is if you use a PDA, your email client on the PDA may not support IMAP fully. Versamail(PalmOS) only sees one layer of folders. This means, I can't view mail that has been sorted by a filter into a sub-folder on my T|X. Looking at getting Chatter to fix that problem.

I don't know much about advantages from a administration viepoint...

I would love IMAP support. I already use IMAP + Thunderbird for my university email and would love to add my gmail account into the mix.

d33pt, click on 'Settings'
Your 'Forwarding and POP' tab should now read 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'. If it doesn't appear, you could try logging out and logging back in. Go there and enable IMAP.

I have it working now - it was slow as molasses about an hour ago but everything is up to speed and smooth now.

This is a long time coming. They claimed they would never do it because of their use of labels and not folders.

I also do not see the option... I've had gmail very soon after it came out.

EDIT: just logged in and out a couple times, still not showing up.

I'm moving a client over to google apps and mail with about 35 users. It would make things oh so much nicer.

Finally! This makes my iPhone email usage 100x better!

Now if only they'd enable it on my account.

BTW, check out the FAQ to see how IMAP works with GMail. Link

For instance, flagging a message in your client gives it a star in the web-interface, moving a message to a folder applies a label to it etc.

I disagree. I think the core application is still fantastic, but I think improvements like this make it that much better.

while i appreciate the versatility of labels, i would still prefer to have folders and virtual folders as an option as well.

Set the filter to skip inbox and apply label. Same as a folder. WIN!

I still don't see it listed

Some family accounts do have it already though, but they aren't high-volume
