gmail needs to be refreshed, it's years old.

I disagree. I think the core application is still fantastic, but I think improvements like this make it that much better.

while i appreciate the versatility of labels, i would still prefer to have folders and virtual folders as an option as well.

You gotta open your mind!

I find the labels to be just as easy and useful (if not more) as folders.

I tend to prefer web mail for personal email (MSN, Gmail) than POP3/IMAP. Just gotten too used to the web interface I guess

I'm really curious as to what google's business plan with this is... now I can completely bypass all the text web ads.

Although, searching my email using google is just far faster than thunderbird.

i dont have it. YET

I hope it will fix my issue, tried adding my gmail to my thunderbird on my laptop, but wanted it to download a local copy of all messages, chagned the settings in gmail to accomodate and it continues to download 200+(different numbers at different times) of the early messages over and over again makind dups and trips. It worked fine on my desktop.

This is good - now I can use outlook for both my school email and my gmail account, instead of always having to keep a website window open for IE.

That said, GMail does have a pretty good web interface.

Glorious! I didn't use my gmail much solely because it lacked this feature. But now, I plan to transition everything back.

I have all of my other Google services under a non-gmail address - I doubt it, but can I link this account to my gmail account?

To answer my own question: not directly.

I did the following to circumvent this issue (having two Google accounts, "user@domain.com" and "user@gmail.com"):
  • Change the email address for the non-gmail account (e.g. "user@domain.com" to "user@domain2.com")
  • Remove the Gmail service from the Gmail account and provide the non-gmail account ("user@domain.com") as the fallback address.
  • Re-add the Gmail service to the primary account (so then "user@gmail.com" and "user@domain.com" point to the same account).
This won't copy all of your settings/data over, which might kill this for most of you, but for most Google data, you can share with other users, so you can log in with the old ("user@domain2.com") account and share with the primary account.

Also, Google always makes the Gmail address the "primary" of the two addresses, but that doesn't mean much (i.e., my Google groups addresses stayed the same).

I love it. Sometimes I use the Gmail web interface, sometimes I use ThunderbirdPortable on my flashdrive, and sometimes I use regular Thunderbird at home, and I love having them all in sync. I want to use it for my phone as well (Motorola Q w/ WM5), however, whenever it downloads the messages via IMAP, they're all empty. Haven't figured that one out yet.

I have it on all 3 of my gmail accounts but I don't have a need for it.

Just wanted to toss that out there..
