I set this up with Thunderbird to see what it's like, but I don't see the point. Gmail already has a great interface and using an email client is slower.

Well, you don't need an open IE/FF window to check your mail for starters. Also, you can view all of your accounts from one single location.

Once Google finally adds IMAP access to everyone (I'm still waiting :|), I'll have my Yahoo!, Gmail, and work email all accessible from Thunderbird.

I'm also still waiting. This sucks.

Although, searching my email using google is just far faster than thunderbird.

Well 99% of the web doesn't download thunderbird. Besides, the people bypassing text ads are probably the ones that have never clicked on one anyways.

Btw, IMAP shows up on my account.

Yes. I have IMAP on one account I don't use POP on but not the one I want it on that uses POP.

I noticed on my Google Apps account that if I create a new user that user has IMAP. Why do they hate me?

I noticed this too, and so I assumed that any new account I created would have IMAP, so I created a few accounts. But I created one account and it didn't have IMAP, and I really wanted IMAP on that one, too. Google has no method to their IMAP madness!

Maybe this has caused their stock to soar above $700.

After some more experimenting and reading, I noticed that for Google Apps accounts, if you're an admin you will not get IMAP access. I don't know why and Google hasn't said anything, but on my account if I create a new admin it doesn't have IMAP access. If I create a new, regular use IMAP is available. My account is an admin and doesn't have access. I tried to create a new one and remove my admin access, but it didn't change anything. I'm going to leave it that way for a few days to see if something happens.

Well, after a few hours, the account that I removed admin privileges from now has IMAP access.

Nothing wrong with that. I see no reason to install an extra application when everything I need and use is neatly packaged in Gmail's interfaced. What I would totally appreciate would a be way to use this to essentially transfer my gmail account to my google apps account.

Actually I'd prefer a way to move everything from my gmail account to my google apps account, including blogger and picasa gallery.

You probably have to tell Thunderbird which folders on Gmail are your trash, inbox, etc.. That's what I had to do on my iPhone.

Actually, that's the way Gmail IMAP works in Thunderbird. All of the messages in your Gmail inbox show up in TB's inbox and the TB trash is local.

I could explain some work-arounds but this Lifehacker article does a good job

THanks

how does imap work in terms of syncing between different computers in terms of contact list, sent mail, read mail etc? If i read and reply to an email on one computer, would my email client on a second computer show that i've done those and have records of my sent mail?
