Gmail is now googlemail???

hi

i gave recently an invite to friend to join "the gmail community" and he was quite disappointed beacuse he could not register a gmail account instead he got a googlemail account. I wonder what happened to the gmail extention!?! I mean it is easier to say blabla at gmail than googlemail. Anyone knows why they changed it? Or are these just my invites?

The G stands for google.

The email address he\you receive when you register is still xxxx@gmail.com

No. You register an account @ google. That account is account@gmail.com

IT DOESN'T MATTER. Its like registering an account with a period (.) anywhere in account name. I.E.

you could send a email to cheaparse@gmail.com and cheap.arse@gmail.com and it would get sent to the same mailbox.

Gmail in Germany

First the German Version of Gmail was known as Gmail Deutschland. After Google placed ads in an German magazine the company Giersch Ventures sued Google because of trademark rights. Giersch Ventures already used the name Gmail in a trademark "G-mail ... und die Post geht richtig ab" since 2001. On the 4 July 2005 Google announced that Gmail Deutschland will be renamed to Google Mail and every German IP will be forwarded to a special server. There every new user will get the address ...@googlemail.com. Every new user who wants to get the address @gmail.com needs to use a proxy while creating the account. User with the new ending @googlemail.com also receive mails with the ending @gmail.com. Outgoing mails have the ending @googlemail.com. Germans who were already registered could keep their old @gmail.com address.

However, it is possible to get a @gmail.com ending as a German anyway: If you click on the invite, you are forwarded to a page similar to this:

By changing the last digit '1' to '2' you will be able to open a @gmail.com-account.
