GMAIL...Never run out of space.....ummmm.........(out of space warning)

Anybody remember the original Gmail slogan?? I think it was something like....'Never run out of email space'. (Or something to that affect)

Well.....I just got a warning that I'm running low. I freed up a couple hundred MB but curious as to best way to tackle more space. (It's inevitable I'll still run out eventually)

Gmail or your Google account? For example, storing photos IIRC has a 15GB limit if you choose 'original quality'.

There's this thing called Google. You can use it to search how to export your emails. Or, you can delete them like most people.

larger:1M (change as necessary)

I hoard a lot of old important emails, but the ones with the large attachments you can easily make alternative arrangements for.

I don't remember that slogan, but regardless, it was never indicated as unlimited (like Google Photos high-quality uploads now). Unless you're paying money for it, rethink your complaint.

Currently in the middle of a 45gb mailbox backup....and i'm having a hard time undertsanding how people store so much junk and deem it important

Yep, I remember that. I think I also remember it still showing some kind of limit at the bottom, but it seemed absurdly large at the time (who's gonna have gigabytes of email?!? [back in the early 2000s])

Undoubtedly it's jpgs and pdfs mostly taking up space. Old cameras didn't even create very large size jpgs so we never thought about 5MB emails.

With Thunderbird (POP or IMAP I'm pretty sure) I can just detach attachments into the local filesystem or delete them entirely.

I'd consider IMAP when I get around to migrating my server to Linux.

And you’re remembering correctly.
Actually it was a counter that increased every second like a rolling odometer. (thus the “never run out” slogan)

That was probably the single largest reason folks went the gmail route.
Now....not so much. (not sure when it changed). And to the dipshits who think storage isn’t free....a new
Gmail account starts that all over again but why create the mess? Why not just allow more space?
YouTube would have crashed into the ditch a long time ago.
This is a gripe for sure. I just happen to think it’s warranted. 😉👌

That's basically my setup now. My online server runs pop3, then fetchmail locally fetches it, then stores it on the local mail server which I then access with imap locally. The local mail server is also in charge of spam filtering. I could do that at the server now days but the original idea behind this setup was to move the processing locally on what is essentially free cpu real estate and to also have access to my email if my internet is down, or I'm simply not connected (Ex: when I had dialup). I just never felt the need to change this setup as I do like the idea of keeping my mail local. It's funny though I can go back to emails from like the early 2000's.

Never have to worry about running out of space, or some 3rd party changing anything on me etc.

i haven't deleted an email in 15 years, but i still have like half my gmail space free
