google made some protocol changes specifically for the purpose of breaking the 3rd party utilities out there, which is why you are getting login problems on the firefox extension

they apparently only want you to use their tools. you know, for when they embark on world domination and stuff

Main reason I didn't use my gmail account was I didn't like having to go check it all the time. This is sweet.

Only took up 500k on my system and the icon changed almost instantly when I checked my mail. anyway, 2 minutes is an acceptable wait time.

Gmail makes its money from the ads they display on the webpage around your mail. If you are just sucking the mail out into a pop3 client, you dont see the ads. I think this may keep them from giving pop3 access.

I agree. Personally, this new little app makes g-mail ALMOST as good as a pop three client. If only the browser window for gmail could be minimized to the tray, that would be even quicker.

what made it even better is that you can actually use it on multiple Gmail accounts.

let's say you have one account that you use regularly for mailing lists, junks and stuff that receives like 250+ e-mail per day (say, yourcoolhandle@gmail.com) and you have another account for personal communication (firstname.lastname@gmail.com), then you can choose to open yourcoolhandle@gmail.com in the browser and put the one with your real name on the tray.

with this setup, you only have to log out of the first account and log back in to check the other one if you know that you have new e-mail.

our company's firewall blocks access to external email sites (excite, yahoo, gmail etc..) I was hoping this would find a way around it, but no such luck.

came up with the stupid security denied screen.

trying using this proxy server in firefox/ie webfilter.gcstation.net:8080 and then see if you can get to it
