Gmail vs. Hotmail

Yahoo is good, particularly with the increased capacity (which is plenty for me); but they took away the ability to edit HTML in email directly, which sux.

GMAIL is great if you are unconcerned about personal privacy (i.e. stupid).

Hotmail/MSN is pretty good. Interface is ok compared to Yahoo. Where is this capacity increase? I have MSN Premium (free from Verizon) and am stuck at 25MB. One thing I frickin' HATE is the fact that when you click links from Hotmail it takes you to a page with a stupid frame. Sheesh that sucks. And I don't like MS tracking the sites I visit!

I'm planning on keeping my hotmail account active, but all my new contacts will be made through gmail. I don't mind checking both. Hotmail is dragging their feet though.. where's the 250MB already ???

Google has a news page (which is better than everything else), a newsgroups page (courtesy of DejaNews.com), e-mail, and a price search engine. Sooner or later they will keep on adding on until they rival Yahoo...

GMail is so fast.

When you post on craigslist and are bombarded with 150 e-mails inquiring about a position, gmail sorts everything into one e-mail so you can reply to all in a sinch.

Hotmail would take 2 weeks just waiting for each fvcking e-mail to load and to send.

Viva la Gmail.

So gmail has targetted ads. I would say that's a lot more useful than the useless ads (and pop-up windows for some) that I see from hotmail and yahoo.

Okay, so gmail's systems scan my emails. Big deal! A computer reads my emails. If I'm using a free email service where all my emails are kept on their systems anyway, what sort of privacy am I really expecting? It's plaintext email for goodness sake! If someone was really interested in my email, they'd have no trouble reading it no matter what service I use.

If you're really concerned about anything reading your email, GPG encrypt it first.

I don't love gmail. They have faults, like slow service at times and overly eager spam filters. But it's still alot better than the other services I've used.

I agree. I think anyone who is worried about a computer scanning their email is the stupid one.

However, why does your sig have a Hotmail email address?

Gmail is still not ready. It freeze sometimes and attachments needs to be uploaded twice to go through (and its realistically ~7mb per email).
Anyway, im gona keep both.

Exactly. Gmail actually has a feature where you can report spam. So its like one big spam fighting network.

The downside to user-spam reporting is that legitmate, requested newsletters and/or messages can be mislabeled as spam. (i.e. user requested it, the newsletter gets sent, spam complaint made, newsletter loses hosting and/or ability to host listserv.)

True, no big deal for me though. I just check my spam folder on occasion.
