Blech, definitely not window maker. I don't like to actually use either of the big desktops, but if I was stuck using one, I'd use gnome.

I prefer KDE.
IMO Gnome is too poorly integrated, and the apps that come with it are inferior to their KDE counterparts, GEdit vs KATE for example.
KDE feels more like it's "By techies for techies" to me.

If you're the type that wants minimalism, you might wanna take pitupepito2000's suggestion and look at Kahakai.
My lightweight WM of choice is XFCE.

Kahakai is only visually minimalist. It uses more ram than pretty much any other "lightweight" wm, has more dependencies, etc..

Heh, haven't used it much, only for ~30 minutes or so, looked like a suped up Fluxbox to me, so I assumed it was similarly lightweight.
Well, we all know what they say about assuming stuff.

Well the Python interpreter is embedded in there so there goes 5MB off the bat. Usually the whole thing uses 8-10MB ram. Not a big deal IMO though, considering how much ram machines have nowadays. Fluxbox, Blackbox et al usually use about 1MB of ram though, so it's 8x bigger :Q

My KDE eats like 25 MB when freshly started.
Grown quickly as I start apps though, but at some point, often around 250-300 MB, it rarely goes any higher no matter what I do.

Gnome OTOH starts about the same for me, but grows and grows and grows, same as my Windows box does.

It's not fair to compare KDE with Kahakai/BlackBox, KDE vs GNOME is more like QT vs GTK. I could use blackbox on my main rig,
but that would take nearly same amount of mem. when all libs are loaded (yes, KDE does start a lot slower, but then kde apps start faster).
Actually, slow starting apps will see the end of me Hopefully KDE 3.2 has workaround for konqueror (works perfectly) and QT 4.0 is said to improve situation by 400% or smth.

I usually go with blackbox. It's what I know, and as a BSD user, I pj33r change. Or something.

I prefer GNOME, but only the Dropline GNOME variation. Dropline makes using GNOME a much more fulfilling and enjoyable experience for me in Linux. After using nothing but Dropline for a full week, I began to notice all the little things I originally hated about KDE3.

When not using Dropline GNOME, I prefer a lighter WM like XFCE4 or Fluxbox.

*EDIT* Ugh, my connection is slow today...

I like xfce with all of the GNOME and KDE libs installed so I can run those apps in a faster desktop environment

I used to use WindowMaker but I've been using E16 for a while now, both startup instantly and are considered lightweight now. Both KDE and Gnome are too much in all respects, I don't want a desktop I just want a window manager with multiple desktops.

I use gnome (not that gnome is perfect or anything).. for me KDE just doesn't "feel right". Can't explain it better than that..

I think it's fair to compare them. While it is a comparison between two different things (window managers and desktop environments), it's also a comparison between different "solutions." A moped isn't a truck but I might still compare the two when deciding what vehicle I should buy. And that's fair.

Yeah, I'd say that they were just slightly skewed, wouldn't you? Window maker should have been "other" :-/
