actually this computer isn't for me. But my friend was interested in custom building a computer. I told him to go Dell. I looked the the prices and features and i think its a fair deal. But i've haven't been following the market lately on computers since i got my inspirion 9300 with the 6800.

But yea. he is looking to throw a computer together for roughly 700$. Its mainly more of a student computer then a gaming computer. But i think he wants all the bells and whistles like LED fans clear cases and what not. I told you with $700 you can get a pretty decent system. I looked at what most you ppl post and are building lately. those a64 3800+ with a nvivda 7200. He doesn't need all that great of a computer. I'm not even sure if i should tell him to go Pci-E with a 700$. Whats a rough figure of what we can throw together for $700 for a light gamer.

I bought a lot of Dells, basically because I was very busy and didn't want to fart around with building a machine. Dell always gave good service for the most part, and the machines were generally stable and lasted a long time (except their earlier monitors). The one downside to a Dell is that they engineer them with a lot of custom components. The PSU, case, fans, motherboard, some cabling, are all proprietary. The machine I just built cost about the same or slightly more than a similarly configured XPS, but all the parts are standard. I like the idea that I could be putting a new mobo in this Coolermaster case ten years from now.

This comes out to around $610. Don't forget you need a video card. Review the benchmarks on the 3200+ so you can see how much value it is compared to its higher priced models.

This seems pretty good, but the included PSU is crap. You can get an Antec Solution with included 350W PSU, which would be loads better. Or you could shell out an extra $40 and get the Fortron 400W @ Newegg. It performs even better than that Antec. If he's doing light gaming, an X800GT should be good.

Bah, my bad. My brain automatically saw CHAS, which I thought was some crappy generic brand. I should have actually clicked on the link -_-; In that case, that PSU should be fine.

Even if you clicked the link, you wouldn't have been able to tell. The link I posted is where you would actually buy it from. I called the company to make sure it had the correct PSU, because their website SUCKS ASS and doesn't specify.

GO DELL.

If something goes wrong who is he going to call? Not you I hope. Dell's systems may suck and they're INTEL only, but hey, better he has something decent with a # to call then something great and your phone #

just my $.02

Yes, go with Dell so you can talk to a stupid #### from India that can't speak english, and make you wait on hold for a really long time.

If something goes wrong, you ask someone for advice. You can get parts directly from the mfc too, in case something happens with your hardware.

For $300, I am sure you can pay someone to be your computer support person.

If he knows how to build the computer himself and knows how to fix it when there is somehting worng with it, then tell him to get a custom computer. If not, Dell or a pre-build computer with (1-year warranty) phone support from any general computer store.

he knows slightly how to fix them. i told him i wouldn't help him much on the techinal support. its already been agreed with. i'ma help him gather parts and kinda build it with him. more like answer questions and eat his food.

pound for pound. i think a dell desktop with a right coupon would be a lot cheaper parts wise to get a system then custom build.

You really dont save much from custom building with all the dell deals lately. aleast i dont see it.

oh yea when i said light gamer. to my knowledge all this guy does is play CS 1.6. he might go into CS:S shortly. but i dont see anything to far from that.

Custom builds are always cheaper than dell's. Always.

But you get exactly what you want with the custom build's, not some knock off.

In exchange though you get free 3 years of tech support, etc with a prebuilt system. Depends on what you want/need.

Most computer users say "my computer won't boot, its broken". They have no idea if its the HD, memory, monitor not turning on, etc. This is what you're inevitably faced with if the guy is an idiot.

You will save a lot of money by building your own, if you plan to build a good computer. Dell has good deals on crappy systems w/ a monitor and printer.

Go with my suggested system. That is about the best hardware for thge money you are looking at spending.

go custom built. You might not save a bit but it is a good investment and aside you also learn on hot too's with your PC.

yea, i got my learning experience the hard way. my first build, i fried the board casue i forgot about the spacers between the board and case. lol but i learned quickly. yea the list of items sound really good to me. We just trying to figure out which video card to add in there. since he doesn't game much but he does like the watch Dvd. he doesn't do any photo edit or anythign like that.

honestly i think the system right there is overkill the one listed above. but since he has a budget might as well get his money's worth.
