It's important to note both products come with ZERO warranty unless you buy the add-on 1 -year warranty option

Homeowner/renter's insurance covers it.

But you shouldn't need it - if you check the 42xx over when you get it, and find it damaged/unfunctional, you can still send it back for a refund or exchange through ReturnBuy's guarantee.

4200 is a very nice unit but it does NOT (and neither does 4250) play vcds or svcds at all - info on Return Buy site is misleading. 4000 does play vcds and svcds but goes for a little more. They did offer me full refund, but I'm still gonna keep my 4200, though that misleading info on their site leaves a bad taste in my mouth. However, I think it's an honest mistake on their part.

By the way, VCDhelp has a remote-based region/macrovision hack for both 4200 and 4250 in their database, but I wasn't able to achive anything. I can get to their system data, but can't change anything. If anyone found out how to fix it right, then this deal would be hot as hell.

looks like the 4250 dropped to the same price as the 4200. price has not changed though for the Amazon store to save $ on shipping...debating whether to bite or not...

The 4250 has better video heads. I think there was one other minor thing, but I forgot what it was...

EDIT: Oh ya the 4250 is listed has having a DTS output where the 4200 says nothing about DTS.

Picked up a 4200 on monday from returnbuy on amazon, $70.23 shipped. I've been looking for a new cheap VCR and a new cheap DVD player, and there's no way I would have been able to get both for such a low price had it not been for this thread. I tested all functions of the unit (which was manufactured in april 2002, so it's not even very old) and have been very impressed! Thanks for the deal!

I'm glad this thread has helped out. I bought a 4200 when it was $55, and then a 4250 when it went down to the same price. I wasn't planning on using vcd's or copying dvd's, so I didn't mind those problems. I just needed a cheap vcr or dvd player, and got both. I've found the macorvision hack, and trhe region hack. I haven't tried them, but will after I move into my new apartment in a month or so. If they work, it'll be a big plus, and I'll let you know. Especially since I like anime and it might be cool to watch some Japanese imports. I always thought the region encoding was a scam, like most of the media industry, since it helps stiffle competition between retailers and producers in different regions.

Anyway, just a reminder, look for the apex threads too. Walmarts have been selling the Apex 20 inch flat screen TV for around $110 and less in some places. If you need a nice small tv to go with the dvd player on the cheap, with enough inputs for both the DVD/VCR, Gamecube, Playstation, and Xbox, itmight be the way to go. Especially when the equivalent competing tv''s cost for over $200 usually.

From my personal rental experience, less and less DVDs are macrovision protected. I think the DVD producers are getting tired of paying macrovision a fee when the percentage of users who actually attemp copying the DVD is pretty small. Here are a few examples of DVDs that weren't macrovisioned: Kate and Leopold, John Q, Training Day, Life as A House, Four Weddings and Funeral, Bull Durham. BTW, these will make excellent videotapes provided you record at SP speed. I think they make better videotapes than store-bought videotapes of the same movie.

One more movie to add to the no-macrovision list is: A Walk To Remember.

A little note on my experience with my recently received 4250 - It would only play about 18 seconds of a DVD before the screen would hang and then the disc would spin as the laser tried to find the right position again. After that the player wouldn't start a dvd again until I unplugged it from the wall and tried the process over again.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem or know a possible fix? If not, I might go ahead and reorder after they take this one back, since it's cheaper now. Thanks!

I got a 4250, and it played willy wonka last night just fine, try another DVD if you haven't already; other wise, send it back.

I received 4200 Thu, and it was poorly package, they ship it with the original box without the original for inside, they used little shipping form instead, of course when I received and open the box, no suprise it had a big dent on the top, I called them, they will ship me a label to ship back, and they will refund the shipping cost too.

I contacted GoVideo directly and they said that they have NEVER had a DVD/VCR unit that defeated macrovision. If you read the ads for these type units they all say that you can record to tape while you're watching a dvd.

I asked the tech at GoVideo if I could play the dvd and instead of watching the dvd, redirect the a/v outputs for the dvd to the a/v tape inputs, with a macrovision stripping device, and therefore, copy a dvd to vhs (which is perfectly legal, as long as you own the dvd). The tech said that the only input that the vcr will take while the dvd is playing is the rf input.

I guess I could get an rf modulator and put it in between the dvd a/v out and the vcr rf in.

Any source for macrovision hacks for dvd/vcr units?? When I go to the one in this thread, the hack only disables/changes regions.

Just did the region hack from VCD HELP. Region 3 discs now play like a charm, Region 2 discs do NOT play at all. I don't have discs from other regions to check. The only logical explanation that comes to mind is that since these players are not designed to play VCDs, they might not have PAL-NTSC conversion. Just a theory, of course.

Yeehah!

Got the 4250 today. I wouldn't say it's the most (ahem) attractive unit out there, but the blue power indicator is cool. Fired it up and both the DVD and tape player seem to work fine. I *like* the remote; much better than the Toshiba remote that I've been using. Overall, it looks like it's going to work out just fine.

Next, we'll have to try some recording. And the hacks!

Thanks!
